Weird and wonderful beauty hack: add a spoonful of sugar to your shampoo

While we do understand the superhero properties of a dry shampoo on a bad hair day, it is also true that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Turns out, not surprisingly, skipping shampoo+conditioning often is not making your scalp happy. Our scalps need equal amount of TLC, including cleansing, moisturizing and, yes, exfoliating as the rest of your skin does.

You don’t actually have to spend precious sleeping time in the shower, scrubbing your scalp.

Quick fix scalp exfoliator

Dr Francesca Fusco of Wexler Dermatology suggests that you add some sugar to your shampoo to remove dead cells from your scalp. “Adding a tablespoon of sugar to a dollop of shampoo will gently exfoliate the scalp. It also easily dissolves and rinses out without leaving any residue on the hair,” she says.

Scrubbing your hair with this mixture of sugar and shampoo will not only exfoliate and rinse away dead skin cells, it will also allow the conditioner to penetrate more effectively, resulting in better cleansing and moisturizing.

Fusco also warns not to go overboard with the scrubbing, as it may throw off the natural oil production in your scalp. She suggests doing it every 3-5 washes, depending on the condition of your scalp.
