When it comes to all things hair in tropical climates, things can get difficult! Whether you’re styling or simply taking care of it, there are a few things you need to keep in mind—especially when the weather is oscillating from dry cold to sticky heat. Celebrity hairstylist, Amit Thakur gives us the low-down on this season’s hottest hair trends, and how to achieve them with minimal damage to your hair.
ELLE: What are this season’s hottest hair trends?
Amit Thakur: This season is all about various textured hairstyles, whether it’s beach waves, loose curls or big curly hair! Straight sleek hair is also trending. People are open to playing around with various hair textures.
ELLE: What’s the best way to style your hair with minimal damage?
AT: As we all know, heat damage on hair is irreversible, so I would suggest using a good heat protection spray on the hair after every wash; it not only saves the hair from the damage of heating tools but also from the UV rays. In addition, one must invest in a hair styling tool that prevents heat damage. My favourite one tool is the Dyson Airwrap that ensures you don’t damage your hair as the intelligent heat technology in this machine measures the temperature of air 40 times each second and sends that data to the microprocessor which doesn’t over heat the hair unlike other hair tools in the market.
ELLE: Since the weather is transitioning into summer, what’s the best way to prevent hair from frizzing, or looking dry and lifeless?
AT: Like I said above using an appropriate heat protection prevents hair from any heat damage that can be caused by the UV rays of the sun and hence also reduces hair frizzing. I personally love the cream base one from Kerastase (ciment thermique) and also summer is all about greasy and sweaty limp hair, so I’d recommend one to carry a good dry shampoo at all times, whenever you feel your hair is lifeless just spray a generous amount, section by section on the roots and your hair is ready and voluminous for 2 more days!
ELLE: Three hairstyles that are perfect for the on-the-go girl?
AT: First would be a sharp center parted sleek low bun and is perfect to go from office to dinner. Second would be a big ponytail that is easy to do, and looks young and fun. Third would be a messy textured top knot. It has a lot of attitude and is easiest to create and the best part is that it can be done on dirty hair, making it perfect for the lazy girl.
