Yes, temperatures were at an absolute low in London but The Fashion Awards 2019, a celebration of the undisputed scions of style, was still high on star-studded glamour.
THE WINNERS
Naomi Campbell won Icon of the Year (the first woman of colour to claim the award). Daniel Lee, Bottega Veneta’s boy wonder behind the cult pouch bags, took away Designer of the Year. Rihanna, who made an entry in a wasabi green dress from her namesake label, won an award in the Urban Luxe category for Fenty. And, model of the year was South Sudanese-Australian beauty Adut Akech. Karl Lagerfeld was given a special tribute (there’s no forgetting Karl, right?) Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen was given the Trailblazer Award.
THE RED CARPET
Other than the awards, the red carpet was lined with looks that made for many memorable moments. Rihanna, the musician-turned-mogul, broke the rules of eveningwear altogether with a satin dress complete with an oversized shirt, gloves and a studded choker. Cate Blanchett chose a classic Armani gown with a plunging neckline. Julia Roberts followed suit in a black Giorgio Armani iteration.

Naomi Campbell received her award in a bejewelled custom-made Alexander McQueen. Multi-hyphenate star Alexa Chung wore a glittery gown from her eponymous label, which was an ode to the iconic Jane Birkin. Shailene Woodley and Liya Kebede made their mark in Instagrammable quilted skirts from Pierpaolo Piccioli x Moncler. Joan Smalls and Amber Valletta let sustainability shine with eco-conscious ensembles made by the joint forces of Stella McCartney and Atelier Swarovski.
