The Weeknd, the man who this time last year made headlines for making out with his then-girlfriend Selena Gomez all over Coachella, returned to the festival last night to perform his heartbreak song considered to be about her, “Call Out My Name”—and nearly broke down during it.
Fans posted footage of The Weeknd near tears on stage and choking up while singing the song’s lyrics. Some lines he couldn’t bring himself to finish, like, “And when times were rough, when times were rough/I made sure I held you close to me” (a reference likely to The Weeknd being for Gomez during her health struggles and kidney transplant last year).
Gomez wasn’t in the audience or at the festival, but Justin Bieber, the on-off ex that Gomez got back together with shortly after ending things with The Weeknd in October, was spotted out at the festival during the day.
The Weeknd also sang “Wasted Times,” a song considered to be about wanting his other ex Bella Hadid back. Hadid herself was at Coachella last night, and one fan at the festival claimed she was in the audience for The Weeknd’s set. Whether she actually was isn’t entirely clear; no footage has been posted of her there.

This was The Weeknd’s first time performing any track from My Dear Melancholy, live on the festival circuit. A year ago, The Weeknd performed at Coachella too as a surprise guest. He and Gomez were there and had one of the highest high points of what they showed of their romance publicly, posting their all-important Instagram official shot. They were four months into what would ultimately be a 10-month relationship. The two split in October. The Weeknd purged his Instagram account of all Selena Gomez photos after and unfollowed her, a public way of saying he was hurt by the breakup.
