15 trendy fashion terms every style insider needs to know

Can you tell your fisherman bag from your basket bag?

By Shweta Gandhi  June 28th, 2018

Fashion trends are cyclical, we’re aware. But these trend-based fashion terms are a different ball game altogether. Not only are some of them completely unnecessary (please explain, what do you fit into a micro purse except air?) but they also defy conventional ideas of good taste (why, Balenciaga, would you introduce dad sneakers?). Still, the fact of the matter is that these runway trends are on fire — every celebrity and influencer is wearing them; every designer is re-interpreting them, season after season.

Of course, there are trends we do understand. Envelope clutches are still our favourite go-to for days we don’t want to bother with a sling bag or a tote; clear PVC shoes save our lives on rainy days; puffer jackets are not only classy, but also an essential must-have for winter days. Go on, learn the latest fashion trends, and take what you must.

15 trend-based fashion terms you need to know:

Bum bags

A popular '90s trend, the bum bag has forced its way through and made itself a wardrobe staple for every connoisseur. The Gucci GG Marmont Belt Bag is one style that's become extremely popular, with the likes of Deepika Padukone and Kourtney Kardashian seen wearing it.

Style tip: Use it in place of a wide belt to cinch a maxi dress together.

Stocking boots

A stocking boot is a literal take on stockings; it's a thigh-high skintight boot that comes in different fabrics. Case in point: Kylie Jenner's Balenciaga spandex thigh boots.

Style tip: The stocking boots will make your legs look longer, so how about we bring that mini dress out?

Clear PVC

Thank Chanel for making plastic fantastic — the label's PVC-themed Spring '18 runway show featured everything from boots to coats. And now, we're seeing clear shoes trending (a favourite of celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian) as well as clear purses, bags and even suitcases (have you seen Off-White's latest version?).

Style tip: The versatility of plastic allows you to style it with anything — plastic shoes with dresses; plastic purses with a basic jeans and top combo. As long as you don't wear it the Kim K way...

Puffer

Puffer jackets were initially popular in the '80s and the '90s, but it was only when Demna Gvasalia showed puffer jackets for his Balenciaga debut in '16 that the look actually became trendy. After that, there was no stopping it — Stella McCartney, Fenty x Puma, Phillip Lim and more designers soon emerged with their own versions of the uber comfortable and practical outerwear.

Style tip: Forget the old, worn out ways of wearing a jacket. How about teaming it with a floral printed midi dress instead?

Pussy Bow

A pussy bow refers to a soft bow tied around a woman's neck. Fortunately or unfortunately, it was Melania Trump who acted as a forerunner for this trend when she wore a pink Gucci pussy bow top to the presidential debate back in 2016.

Style tip: A pussy bow detail adds a feminine look to your ensemble. Pair it with dainty earrings or heels to round off your outfit.

Utility jumpsuits

Jumpsuits can either be the comfiest outfit or the exact opposite. Enter: utility jumpsuits, which are, simply put, utilitarian in nature. The silhouette takes inspiration from the classic flight suit and packs in a boxy look with loose trousers to ensure you can spend long hours without complaints.

Style tip: Opt for darker colours like royal blue, bottle green and black.

Micro purse

We're not sure who started this trend of carrying the smallest of purses — Kim Kardashian West? Rihanna? Kendall Jenner? — but we're pretty sure who's currently lovin' it. Priyanka Chopra. The Quantico actor has been seen multiple times with super tiny bags (like the Jacquemus Le Sac Chiquito mini bag) and we're not sure what exactly goes in it...

Style tip: Carry this purse when you have literally nothing else to carry. We're not kidding.

Duster

A duster is essentially a long line jacket that takes after a kimono overlay, and literally dusts the floor as you walk.

Style tip: Go bold by styling a printed duster jacket with a printed dress.

Glove boots

The glove boot is technically a ballerina with a block heel, and it was Céline's version of it that made everyone stand up and take notice. Though it may not be your first choice, the glove boot has taken up its rightful place next to the most iconic shoes of the season.

Style tip: Style them with a printed pantsuit for a chic, modern update.

Envelope clutch

An envelope clutch is basically a medium-to-large sized clutch designed to resemble an envelope. Minimal and easy to carry, this clutch has won over many Bollywood as well as Hollywood celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Khloe Kardashian.

Style tip: Perfect to pair with oversized outfits or statement sleeves, as the thin clutch takes away from the maximal look.

Fisherman bag

Who would have thought bags made out of a basic netting material would actually become fashionable to carry? From Edie Parker to Vetements, these carry-alls are all you need this season. If the micro purse trend doesn't work out for you, try the fisherman tote, which literally carries everything you need for the day.

Style tip: Swap your oversized leather hobo for this fisherman bag.

Tape detailing

Whether it's the logo tape detailing so commonly seen at Off-White or a basic tape detailing that runs vertically down your trousers (as seen on Gigi Hadid), this minimal trimming lends an athleisure touch to your outfit.

Style tip: Team a pant featuring tape detailing with a white slogan tee and sneakers to nail a street style look.

Guitar strap bags

Guitar strap bags are an ideal way to give your handbag a colourful update. Choose from embroidered, studded and embellished straps that instantly perk up your look.

Style tip: Pair your guitar strap with a bag in a monotone colour.

Dad sneakers

Mom jeans, dad sneakers... a lot of fashion trends come from our parents' generation, don't they? Nah, not dad sneakers. This one is out and out Balenciaga, who released their Triple S line of sneakers (and Janhvi Kapoor has taken to them. Is fashion broken?). Since when did ugly sneakers become the norm?

Style tip: They're undoubtedly comfortable, but would work the best when styled with athleisure.

Sock boots

Featuring a pointed toe, the sock boot comes halfway up your calf. It's usually tight-fitted and gives the impression of you wearing socks with your boots (duh). Balenciaga and Vetements are some brands who have made this trend popular, with the likes of Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner wearing them.

Style tip: Pair them with jeans for a grunge look.
