Tyra Banks has an issue with people who think supermodel beauty can be achieved by just drinking water and getting some sleep. And in a new memoir, she admits that early in her modelling career, she had plastic surgery.
“I had bones in my nose that were growing and itching,” Banks told People. “I could breathe fine, but I added cosmetic surgery. I admit it! Fake hair, and I did my nose. I feel I have a responsibility to tell the truth.” She said she hasn’t had “age stuff” done yet, and doesn’t judge people who do. “Fix it or flaunt it—I think women should be able to do both,” she said.
Back in 2011, Banks told Piers Morgan she was open to plastic surgery “when the time comes,” and noted that it had been a longstanding rumor that she had breast implants. “It was a very big rumor that I had breast implants and I don’t blame you. They pretty much looked fake,” she said. “I’ll admit that they did look fake, but they weren’t. And my mom was like, ‘They have no idea that you’re just [busty].’”
She wrote her memoir, Perfect Is Boring, with her mother, and the book talks about what her mother taught her about life and self-image. Banks told People that she’s learned it’s okay to wear makeup, even if (gasp!) it looks like you’re wearing makeup.
“As a model, I needed makeup. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that,” she told the magazine. “It leveled my playing field. Gisele, you don’t need it? I do! And we’re both modeling for Victoria’s Secret.” Plus, after 24 cycles of America’s Next Top Model, she’s probably learned that the makeover moments are the most fun part, anyway.
