6 unconventional fashion shows at New York Fashion Week

It seems that with every passing year, designers showcasing at the New York Fashion Week are growing bored of the standard runway shows and are choosing non-conformist ways to present their new collections. Last year saw Kanye West take to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island to unveil his Yeezy Season 4 collection while Tommy Hilfiger converted Pier 16 at the South Street Seaport into his own personal Tommy Pier complete with amusement park rides.

This year, designers pulled off equally unconventional shows in unusual locations. Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2017 show took place in his garage in Bedford, reputed to be one of the most luxurious in the world, which housed Bugattis, Bentleys, Ferraris and more under one roof. Supermodels Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner strutted around the cars, making the setting resemble a James Bond movie.

At Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma show, held at the Park Avenue Armory, a historic brick building on New York’s posh Upper East side area, stuntmen on motorcycles flew through the air taking 360 degree flips over mountains made of pink sand.

On the other hand, Tory Burch brought on the celebrations for a summer beach party by converting the courtyard of a design museum into a faux English garden, with models strutting along the grass.

For Alexander Wang, the streets of New York became literal runways. The actual party began in a bus that saw supermodel-in-the-making Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford, alight and walk down the road, straight into a warehouse.

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony have always taken the extravagant path — a play, a politically-themed pageant, a ballet, and now, a theatrical performance. Titled Changers, the story explores the evolution of relationships through movement and dance.

Creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim of Monse were particularly inspired by collegiate wear and varsity uniforms, and chose to show their threads on a basketball court in a gymnasium.
