The Best Vintage Red-Carpet Moments Over The Years

Sneakers made out of mushrooms, a pair of jeans utilising just one cup of water, to the surge in vegan formulas—fashion and beauty are abuzz with stories of sustainability lately. And while celebrities world over are taking charge to highlight the perils of climate change through fashion, the phenomenon isn’t new; for over two decades, the charm of vintage has lured celebrities to experiment with sepia-tinted sensibilities. They’ve rocked such outfits at parties and graced formal events, looking their elegant best. Here’s a round-up of our favourite vintage red-carpet moments over the years.

1. Kim Kardashian

Vintage

For the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party in 2020, the make-up mogul was seen in an Alexander McQueen dress which belonged to the designer’s SS 2004 ‘Shipwrecked’ collection.

2. Jennifer Aniston

Vintage

To pick up her Best Actress Award in a Drama Series at the SAG Awards 2020, the FRIENDS actor wore a vintage Christian Dior by John Galliano. It was a white silk bias-cut dress. “This is a vintage dress that I sort of gave to myself as a present. It is an investment. These are designers that are working for particular houses—I only have a couple,” Aniston had shared in a statement.

3. Rita Moreno

Vintage

In 1962 when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in West Side Story, Rita Moreno attended the ceremony in a black gown to accept her win. And 50 years later, she re-wore the same gown at Oscars 2018.

4. Olivia Rodrigo

Vintage

At the recently concluded MTV Video Music Awards, the ‘good 4 u’ singer wore a vintage Versace gown from the atelier’s SS 2001 couture collection.

5. Natalie Portman

The star of Black Swan was seen at the 84th Annual Academy Awards in 2012 wearing a red and black polka-dot gown by Christian Dior from 1954.

6. Gwyneth Paltrow

Vintage

For presenting an award at the 71st Emmy Awards in 2019, the actor and businesswoman was seen in a monochromatic haute couture Valentino dress from 1963.

7. Jane Fonda

Vintage

To raise awareness about climate change, Jane Fonda made a promise in 2019 that she would never make a fashion purchase again. And of course, she kept her word. The actor re-wore a glimmering Elie Saab gown from Cannes Film Festival 2014, again at the 2020 Oscars.

8. Kristin Davis

Charlotte from Sex & The City has aced vintage fashion. For the Fortune 2010 White House Correspondents’ dinner pre-party in 2009, Kristin Davis shined in a white and gold Pierre Balmain Haute Couture dress from 1969.

9. Julia Roberts

The Pretty Woman star accepted the Best Actress Award at the 73rd Annual Academy Awards in 2001 in a monochrome Valentino dress from 1992. A visual delight, we’d say.

10. Kate Middleton

Vintage

To attend the BAFTA ceremony back in 2017, Kate Middleton made an appearance in a dazzling floor-length, black floral gown by Alexander McQueen. Two years later at the National Portrait Gallery gala in March 2019, the Duchess re-wore the gown with tailored sleeves to refresh her look.
