‘Wannabe’ by Spice Girls gets a feminist new video

There’s no way to listen to this song and not feel a hit of pure Nineties nostalgia. The Spice Girls’ anthem ‘Wannabe’ is the track for a new video produced by Project Everyone and features Jacqueline Fernandez, British music trio M.O, South African hip hop artist Gigi Lamayne, and the 16-year-old model and dancer Larsen Thompson, among other entertainers. Project Everyone is a campaign to build awareness about the United Nations’ The Global Goals for Sustainable Development, a set of pledges taken by world leaders towards three major goals: ending extreme poverty, fighting inequality and injustice and fixing climate change. This video, and related social media campaign tagged #WhatIReallyReallyWant, focuses on the goals that affect women particularly, like ending child marriage, promoting education for girls and wage parity. We love that these serious, worthy topics are being served up with the aid of power dancing moves, those familiar nonsensical lyrics and a kicky sports bra-with-cargos vibe.
