It’s been a great week. Dozens of Hollywood actors (and other assorted celebrities) have inundated our timelines with videos of them upending buckets of ice water over their heads. Unless you’re a mountain-dwelling llama, you’ve caught at least one of them. They’re braving the cold to help raise awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative motor neuron disease.
How does it work? You empty a bucket (or more) of ice cold water over your head. Challenge three friends to do the same. And don’t forget to add the hashtag #ALSicebucketchallenge. The irony is that if you complete the challenge you don’t need to make a donation – but most of these stars did to the ALS Association in America and MacMillan Cancer Support in Britain.
Now hundreds of thousands have come forward to show support for a disease they only heard of yesterday. But hey, we’re not complaining. So long as the videos are entertaining (and a worthy cause, benefitting), keep ’em coming.
Here’s a look at our favourites so far.
Tom Hiddleston killing us with cuteness. As always.
Bill Gates gets endearingly inventive, and goes one up on Zuckerberg.
Proof that Cara Delevingne is a total pottymouth.
Lena Dunham in an adorable one-piece – her adorbs pooch, Lamby, makes a special appearance.
We heart Lady Gaga, for her deadpan alone.
Robert Downey Jr cries like an animal.
The universe answers Weird Al Yankovic’s prayers.
Jennifer Lopez suffers a sneak attack.
Ricky Gervais, because he more than makes up for Gaga’s cold response.
Conan O’Brien missed a memo about how this works.
Someone forgot to tell James Franco to keep it PG13.
And lastly, Charlie Sheen puts his own spin on the challenge.
