Celebrated Chinese jewellery designer Bao Bao Wan launched an 18K gold limited-edition teapot-shaped pendant in collaboration with the St. Regis in Shanghai earlier this month. Known for fashioning traditional Chinese symbols into contemporary fine jewellery, the designer’s inspiration for this creation came from the luxury hotel chain’s afternoon tea ritual – a closed gathering of society’s elites. “The gold polish signifies the glamorous lifestyle offered by the St. Regis while the ruby is a nod to the brand’s signature red colour,” she said of the piece.

The St. Regis’ first Connoisseur from China find herself in the company of legendary polo player Nacho Figueras, fashion designer Jason Wu, and modern jazz icon Jamie Cullum as brand ambassadors of the hotel chain, among others. “My relationship with the St. Regis began in my childhood with their hotel in Beijing. I still remember running up and down the grand staircase,” she reminisces fondly.
The design process
“As a jewellery designer not only do you have to consider the beauty of the piece but also what your customer feels when they are wearing it, which is the same as hotel service.”
