The weird celebrity couples of 2018 (who we’re openly rooting for)

Flashbacks of Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton still plague our dreams

By ELLE team  June 1st, 2018

What are weird celebrity couples? They’re the unions of two celebrities who, by all logical reasoning, shouldn’t even know each other or ever have reason to cross paths. But thanks to both parties being famous, they do. It’s a celebrity couple whose individual parts exist on opposite sides of the entertainment sphere. Think the opposite of Jay and Bey. That’s Jay-Z and Beyonce to you.

Think Uday Chopra and Nargis Fakhri, Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton, or even Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai. You get the picture.

A weird celebrity couple doesn’t necessarily have to be one that didn’t work out — Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are proof of that. An American TV star with the prince of England, not exactly a likely match. Donald Trump and Melania also fall in the strange category, but it’s probably the least strange and cringe-inducing aspect of Donald Trump’s existence so let’s not start that rant.

Well, 2018 has been anything but disappointing so far, blessing us with many strange couplings that we kinda hope end up together, because life would be very boring otherwise.

Weird celebrity couples of 2018

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas

Let's not even talk about celebrity relationships if you're not prepared to discuss Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. The two reportedly met through Priyanka Chopra's Quantico co-star and Nick Jonas' friend, Graham Rogers. The first public appearance they made together was at the MET Gala last year when they showed up together in Ralph Lauren. While matching fashion sensibilities is a good enough reason as any to pick a date, the two seemed to be hitting it off on the red carpet.

Since, they have been spotted at sporting games together, as well as hanging out with a bunch of other famous people on yachts getting cosy. As a source told Us Weekly earlier this week, "They are dating and it’s brand new. It’s a good match and they are both interested in each other." The real reason why their relationship seems to weird fans out though is because nobody really saw it coming and well, the age difference. Priyanka Chopra is 10 years older than the 25-year-old, but we're here shouting "Get it, gurl." The only worry: Now that Quantico's been cancelled, how will long distance work?

Why don't you just read the body language for yourself:

Nicki Minaj and Eminem

We don't need to go into why this is weird and possibly not true. The rumours of these two getting together have been flying around the internet since they've been teasing fans about it on Instagram and at their respective concerts. Nicki even featured on Eminem's new track Big Bank rapping, "Told them I met Slim Shady, bag the Em/ Once he go black, he'll be back again." Anyone who has been listening to rap long enough is sure to get creeped out by this union, it's like watching your childhood merge with your present on a very dysfunctional timeline. To be honest, we're selfishly hoping this is true. Even if the couple does eventually break up, just imagine the diss tracks...

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor

This is one for the relationship professionals. Alia Bhatt has gone on record to say how growing up, she had the biggest crush on Ranbir Kapoor. And everyone in the industry seems to have their own thoughts on Ranbir's track record when it comes to dating his co-stars. But this is only weird because it reminds us of another former celebrity relationship: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. While the age difference isn't comparable, the story is similar. A little girl grows up to be an actress and have her childhood crush turn over a new leaf to become the man of her dreams. While it didn't work out in the case of Tom and Katie, it would seem the full Kapoor clan is on board with Ranbir and Alia. Which would probably make Alia the first of Ranbir's girlfriends after Sonam to be liked by Kareena Kapoor.

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson

This isn't weird so much as goofy. And also, unexpected. From Ariana's last two relationships, we had deduced that the singer had a type: rappers. But it turns out she's reverted to her comedy days by dating SNL star Pete Davidson. Both started out their careers young in comedy, Dave in SNL at 20 and Ariana on Nickelodeon when she was just 16. Still, Dave's goofy vibe is a far cry from Big Sean or Mac Miller, Ariana's last two boyfriends. The two have been super cutesy all over each other's Instagram, and to be honest, we're kind of happy the funny guy got the girl.
