They got it from their mama

For us, regular folks the first day of work isn’t usually documented and immortalised by the media. But in the case of Bollywood actresses, every success and failure is photographed and preserved for posterity. And when you’re a legacy actor i.e. when you are following in your actor parent’s footsteps, you have a whole archive of their films to look back on. It’s a chance to either emulate them or avoid their mistakes. Being the famous child of a famous star also comes with a whole host of negatives, like watching your mom in cringeworthy clothes doing a cringeworthy dance. Or, having your talents being constantly being compared to theirs.

But it’s also great because family throwbacks consist of watching your mom’s old movies and having people point out how much you look like her.

Comparing the debuts of these 9 Bollywood actresses to their star moms:

Babita, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor

Babita's first movie release was 1966's Dus Lakh, six years before she married Randhir Kapoor and entered the most prolific film family in India. Her debut came 25 years before Karisma's in Prem Quaidi, when the third-generation star was just 17 years old. Kareena followed suit in 2000 with Refugee at the age of 20.

Dimple Kapadia and Twinkle Khanna

At the age of 16, a red bikini-clad Dimple Kapadia burst onto the scene and became an icon with her role in 1973's Bobby. Twinkle debuted with 1995's Barsaat when she was just 19.

Tanuja and Kajol

Tanuja made her debut as a child actor and we would honestly have cast her as young Anjali in Kajol's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The actress's first movie as an adult was Chabilli.

Tanuja and Kajol

Like her mother, Kajol chose to debut with no last name in Bekhudi at the age of 17 in 1992. Tanuja also played her mother in the film, passing on the baton along with her acting chops.

Hema Malini and Esha Deol

Hema Malini was pushed as Bollywood's 'dream girl' after her first lead role performance opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapno Ka Saudagar. She was 20 years old at the time and stunning. A 21-year-old Esha Deol would debut in 2002, unmistakably her mother's daughter with the same doe eyes and face structure.

Sharmila Tagore and Soha Ali Khan

Sharmila Tagore made her Tollywood debut at the age of 15, five years before she shot to fame with her Bollywood premier Kashmir Ki Kali. Soha Ali Khan was a late debutant at 26, but she made her first Tolly and Bolly appearance both in 2004.

Sridevi and Jhanvi Kapoor

Much like her kids, Sridevi grew up in the limelight as a child star beginning her career in Tollywood. It was in 1979 at the age of 16 when she made her first Bollywood appearance in Solva Sawan. While Jhanvi may be jaded by the paparazzi flashes, the 19 year old is yet to prove her acting chops on the big screen. Dhadak is set to release this year, with Jhanvi as the female lead.

Sarika and Shruti Hassan

Sarika too was a child star in Tollywood, except her first role was playing a male character. Sarika acted through her childhood into Bollywood releasing four films in 1975. The 15 year old was still alternating between playing a school girl and the leading lady. Shruti Hassan didn't debut until she was 22, not counting a cameo in one of her father's movies. Her first Bollywood movie was Luck, opposite Imran Khan in 2008.
