Time to shift focus from court

By Gargi Agrawal  July 11th, 2021

Ask any lawn tennis enthusiast and you’ll know exactly what Wimbledon means to them. Often regarded as the most important event of the sports calendar, fans and non-followers turn their eyes to the legendary grass-court come June-July. From Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe’s rivalry at Wimbledon finals in 1980 to cult favourite Serena Williams knocking enemies down, the court harbours all the attention and might we say, keeps spectators glued till the end.

While Wimbledon is highly coveted and known for iconic moments in sports history, the buzz off-court has been equally important. From Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle shutting down feud rumours to the likes of Victoria Beckham, Kendall Jenner, Emma Watson and more serving major looks—allow us to take you to the sidelines and refresh your cultural and sartorial memory. Ahead, we’ve put together the best of Wimbledon moments and fashion. Swipe through:

Kate Middleton And Meghan Markle Watching The Games Together

When Prince Harry and Meghan decided to move out from Kensington Palace in 2019 to lead a more private life with their growing family, feud rumours erupted between Kate and Meghan, pointing towards a rift. However, the Royals made an appearance at Wimbledon 2019, proving that there was no bad blood between them. While their coming together at the games shut down the rumours, their sense of style and choice of simple silhouettes mirrored a new form of relatability on-court. Kate opted for an A-line, green Dolce & Gabbana dress and Meghan donned a white blouse and pleated skirt by Hugo Boss—both reflective of effortless fashion at its best.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas In Ralph Lauren

Currently shooting for Russo Brothers' Citadel in London, mega-watt star Priyanka Chopra Jonas managed to scoop out time to watch the final fight for the Grand Slam. Chopra made an appearance at the games dressed in a Ralph Lauren silk blouse and pants styled with The Ricky Bag from the luxury label’s Pre-Fall 2021 collection. She finished off her look with layers of dainty gold chains, which bought the entire outfit together.

Victoria Beckham’s Slip Dress

One of the most prestigious championships in the world, Wimbledon follows a strict ‘all white’ or ‘smart dress’ code. While the sports event is an iconic occasion where tennis fashion truly thrives, Victoria was clearly made to break the rules. The former Spice Girl member showed up at the Men’s Wimbledon Finals in 2013 in a risqué, lacy Louis Vuitton slip dress.

Anne White’s Controversial Catsuit

American lawn tennis player shocked spectators at Wimbledon in 1985 when she played her first round in an all-white, lycra catsuit complete with leg warmers.

Serena William’s White Trench Coat

For Wimbledon 2008, Serena broke protocols as she made an appearance on-court dressed in an all-white trench coat. The tennis-power-turned-fashion-mogul accessorised her look with a white bandana and chunky hoops, which became a sartorial controversy on-court.

Emma Watson’s All-White Look

For Wimbledon in 2018, Emma clearly received the style memo as she turned up in a stunning three-piece pristine white suit. Offering a refreshing spin to the formal silhouette, she paired a sharp blazer and button-up vest with more billowy trousers in just the right proportion. The star of Harry Potter fame went on to be dubbed as the ‘best-dressed celebrity’ at the games.

Maria Sharapova’s Tuxedo Style Short Suit

Sharapova is not new to donning daring fits at the championships, all thanks to the time she wore diamond encrusted kicks for her match. The ace lawn tennis player made a statement on court in 2004 and 2008 when she ditched her figure-hugging dresses for a more ‘tuxedo look’. She opted for a tailored yet sporty tuxedo style jacket and sleeveless tee which veered away from her iconic aesthetic.
