The course features training in a variety of surface embellishments—embroidery, beading and also thread-work. Along with complete access to design and making methodologies in traditional and digital textile design offered to the students, the course is backed with workshops, professional expertise by academic staff along with researchers and visiting designers, coming from both local and international craftsmanship excellence. Owing to the focus on surface design and embroidery, Istituto Marangoni Mumbai has collaborated with the Rilievi Group – a leading Italian company in handmade tailoring and embroidery for the haute couture industry – who will offer students of the course practical on-ground training in some of the workshops they conduct on surface embellishments.

Weighing in on the course, nature of fashion and haute couture, Tarun Pandey, COO of Istituto Marangoni Mumbai shared in a statement, “India’s fashion industry is rooted in its craftsmanship traditions such as embroidery and a wide variety of surface embellishments. These crafts have become an essential element in the development and production techniques of the most renowned ready-to-wear and haute-couture brands. Not only will any Indian fashion designer implement embroideries and other embellishments in their designs, but these are also becoming increasingly employable and attractive for designer opportunities abroad. International fashion houses are seeking creative professionals with the specific technical knowledge of these antique crafts, applied to contemporary creative thinking and aesthetics.”

The new program challenges students to develop their own perception about fashion, embroidery and surface design. It pushes them to think about what it is, what it can become and realise their full potential all while harbouring advanced fashion design skills.

Istituto Marangoni alumnus and Head of Innovation and Design – Rilievi, Ms. Tasneem Kalaniya, adds, “It is so important for us as designers to realise our roots, immerse ourselves deeper into our imaginations and break into reality while reasoning our choices. I am a proud alumni of IM Paris and was trained by the faculty of IM Paris to point my design aesthetics towards my strength of embroidery and craftsmanship. The encouragement and constructive criticism that I received, allowed me to represent our culture, our heritage, our know-how and our beliefs in more ways than I imagined. In today’s technologically dominated world, I use hand embroidery and craftsmanship as my power to create myself a place in the global fashion industry that reminds people of the attention to detail, touch of human hand and a spill of emotions.”
