You’ve been religiously following a morning evening skincare routine, remembering to take your makeup off even when you totter in late after a particularly wild night, and never miss SPF. Yet, in our pursuit of beauty, one often-overlooked factor quietly asserts its influence: cortisol. Referred to as the stress hormone, cortisol not only impacts our mental well-being but also leaves its mark on our physical appearance, quietly shaping the health of our skin.
Dr Madhuri Agarwal, founder and medical director of Yavana Aesthetics Clinic, emphasises cortisol’s role in accelerating the ageing process. “Elevated cortisol levels hinder the skin’s natural ability to heal and regenerate, leading to early signs of ageing such as loss of elasticity and collagen. Furthermore, disrupted cortisol levels disturb the skin barrier, resulting in increased water loss and subsequent dryness and sensitivity. This weakened barrier also leaves the skin vulnerable to environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays,” she explains.
Dermatologist and trichologist Dr Sravya Tipirneni Reddy underscores the correlation between cortisol levels and skin conditions like adult acne. She says, “Increased cortisol levels can spur oil production and inflammation, exacerbating issues such as eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. The hormone also disrupts the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture, leading to dryness, flakiness and a dull appearance.” Fortunately, by managing cortisol levels, one can mitigate this process and preserve their skin health.
Achieving cortisol equilibrium involves adopting habits that prioritise both physical and mental well-being. “There are a few holistic wellness measures, such as prioritising adequate sleep, eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and exercising regularly that can help manage cortisol. Also, incorporating mindful practices like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing into our routines can be beneficial,” suggests Dr Reddy. Ultimately, by nurturing inner balance and managing cortisol levels, we not only protect our skin’s health and slow down the ageing process but also cultivate a more harmonious and fulfilling lifestyle.
