Even though the past mood in fashion has been full of maximalist silhouettes, this year is going to be ruled by minimalism. The runways, this season, were replete with looks that were going back to classics. This was ushered in with head-to-toe whites; sharply-cut blazers, turtlenecks; and beige layered on top of beige. Sneakers have now become the go-to shoes, as have sturdy boots and sandals.
Chanel, for instance—a brand known for its ultra-glamorous looks—has veered towards its new-found minimalism under Virgie Viard; its recent show presented only monochrome looks in velvet and tweed. Hermès went back to the drawing board by using only primary colours for its Fall Winter 2020 collection as it presented clothes that were deemed as essentials. Miu Miu’s recent show went back to ’90s minimalism with easy white dresses styled with cardigans and at Loewe, essentials were stripped down to a sheer bras and flowing skirts.
And, this isn’t just limited to the runways. Minimalist silhouettes, easy-to-wear separates and organic colours are increasingly cropping up in celebrity wardrobes as well. Kim Kardashian has formed the foundation of her wardrobe (and her Instagram account) with an all-neutral palette. And, stars like Deepika Padukone was spotted in an outfit that looked like it was inspired by The Matrix.
