ELLE: Having dabbled into both couture and pret, what according to you makes couture relevant in this day and age?

Falguni Shane Peacock: Couture remains highly relevant even today due to its qualities of exclusivity, timelessness, and meticulous craftsmanship. Each couture piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, tailored to the individual, and made with such precision that it can be passed down through generations. In contrast to the rapid consumption and short lifespan of mass-produced fashion, couture offers enduring value and sustainability. It supports traditional craftsmanship, celebrating skills and artistry passed down over centuries, and provides an authentic, meaningful piece. Also, couture surpasses trends, emphasising quality over quantity, and creating ensembles that are both beautiful and lasting.

ELLE: Give us a peek into the name and the inspiration of your collection.

FSP: We are excited to present ‘Rang Mahal,’ a couture collection at this year’s India Couture Week. The collection is inspired by the regal and dreamy aspects of India’s royal heritage. ‘Rang Mahal,’ or ‘Palace of Colours,’ draws from around forty iconic elements of India’s rich heritage—such as the grand palaces, lavish lifestyles, and exquisite artwork found in India’s palaces. Each outfit is a tribute to India’s royal heritage, brought to life by our master artisans from our atelier and Swadesh—an initiative of Mrs. Nita Ambani by the Reliance Foundation, who have inherited the legacy of their ancestors. The collection celebrates the rich diversity and vivid hues that define our culture, heritage and traditions.

ELLE: What are the silhouettes, colour palettes and embellishments utilised?

Falguni

FSP: ‘Rang Mahal’ features a range of luxurious silks, rich velvets amongst other textiles, adorned with intricate embroideries that exude the opulence of royal courts. The silhouettes are inspired by majestic symbols of India, including resplendent peacocks and parrots, swans, horses, elephants and magnificent tigers. The colour palette is subtle yet vibrant and diverse, encapsulating the essence of India’s cultural richness. Embellishments include intricate paisleys, Kashmiri thread work, sparkling diamonds, and traditional motifs that tell stories of India’s artistic heritage.

ELE: Name a yesteryear Hollywood muse who would do justice to this collection of yours.

FSP: It would definitely be Grace Kelly. Grace’s elegance was unmatched and would have undoubtedly done justice to our couture collection ‘Rang Mahal.’ Her refined and innate sense of style perfectly aligns with our designs. Her grace and poise would enhance the regal colours and exquisite details of the collection.

ELLE: If pieces from your new collection were to be styled in an iconic Bollywood movie, which one would it be and why?

FSP: Our collection ‘Rang Mahal’ or even any of our previous couture collections are all about grandeur and opulence. Keeping that in mind, I think any of Bhansali Productions and Dharma Productions’ films would be a great fit to place our couture ensembles.
