ELLE India : Editor’s Note For The Fashion Issue

Rashmika Mandanna

Growing up in a small town in the ‘90s, fashion for me always came from magazines. The glossy pages gave me insights into the colours, textures and silhouettes to watch out for. Two decades later, I still find myself turning to fashion magazines for trends. It always felt grand, exclusive and, at times, unattainable… Earlier this year, sitting in the front row of Paris Fashion Week, I felt right at home. And that’s the change right there in two decades. Fashion has become inclusive—in size, trends, cultural influences and the people it lets in.

The ELLE India September issue pays homage to this transformation. Our fashion pages are packed with a mix of trendsetters–the ones scaling new heights and the OG gang who walked so we could all run. The DNA of India Fashion deep dives into the work of 26 designers who have changed the landscape of fashion over the decades.

The School of New shines the spotlight on students of fashion school pushing boundaries and making an impact. Fashion Forward sets the focus on a new wave of designers set to change the rules when it comes to design, sustainability and style. Not to forget the magazine staple—the autumn-winter trends of the year that you absolutely need to bookmark.

Our cover star, Rashmika Mandanna, is the perfect choice for an issue celebrating change. Hasina Jeelani writes, ‘Building a legacy across film industries, Mandanna stands on the exhilarating tipping point of an industry-wide awakening of the shrinking barriers of language.’ Mandanna shares, “For me, there is always one cinema: Indian cinema, which connects all the parts of the nation.”

The beauty pages feature interesting conversations with makeup artists who excel in runway makeup and are tasked with the job of bringing out the elements of fashion on the face. “As a part of the creative process, we as artists take into cognisance every factor ranging from the colours of the collection, the textures used to create the clothes and the seasonality,” explains Gregoris Pyrpylis, creative director at Hermès Beauty.

We loved putting together this page-turner and hope you love it too.
