#ELLEBackToBasics: Argan Oil, All You Need To Know

Argan Oil

Argan oil is one of the best superfoods for the skin. Coined as liquid gold, it’s enriched with vitamins A, E and C. There’s a reason why it’s found in every product from body lotions to hair serums and even eyeshadows. With properties that can protect and enhance skin, this oil is truly wonderful.

What Is Argan Oil?

It is a plant oil extracted from the roots of the Argan tree (aka Argania Spinosa), grown in Morocco. Rich in fatty acids and oleic and linoleic acid, it penetrates deep into the skin and works its magic to treat dryness and sometimes even acne. In terms of texture, it falls right in the middle of the richness spectrum–not too heavy like coconut oil, nor too sheer like rosehip oil.

From lipsticks to shampoos, argan oil is an important ingredient if you’re looking for extra moisturisation, making it ideal for dull and dry skin and hair.

Benefits

1. Anti-inflammatory:  Argan oil is an ideal ingredient to soothe irritated, itchy skin. Thanks to its non-comedogenic and non-greasy properties, it also works for acne-prone skin.

2. Moisturising: Argan oil is the ultimate solution for dry and flaky skin. It moisturises instantly and can also be used as hair oil.

3. Rich in antioxidants: Thanks to the vitamin E and polyphenols present in argan oil, it inhibits skin damage caused by environmental factors.

4. Anti-ageing: Oral or topical application of argan oil can significantly increase the elasticity of the skin.

Be Cautious

For the most part, argan oil does not have any major side effects. However, certain skin conditions can get aggravated like seborrheic dermatitis. When combined with actives, it can enable penetration of strong ingredients like retinol which is not desirable. Additionally, if you have extremely sensitive skin, it’s best to do a patch test or consult your dermatologist before buying a bottle for your shelfie.
