Love Gucci? Love denim? Great. You’re in for a treat. While Alessandro Michele has always favoured the use of denim in his collections, the Creative Director of the Italian luxury house reimagined the emblematic GG monogram in a special denim jacquard for Gucci Epilogue called GG Denim.
But what makes this fabric so unique? The start-to-finish process is a nod to sustainability. Here’s how. The jacquard fabric is made from 100% organic cotton, which is treated to give it a worn-out, retro look. The cultivation of organic cotton requires less water, restricts the use of chemicals, pesticides and artificial fertilisers, improves soil quality and hence retains biodiversity.
The GG logo makes use of a jacquard weaving technique in which a classic denim indigo colour is used for the warp and a white one for the weft. The dual colour highlights the logo better. Furthermore, the indigo threads release a small amount of colour during the stone-washing process, resulting in a typical denim look. The used, vintage effect as seen on the fabric is a result of piece-dying and the finishing process involves a fixing treatment for colour fastness.
Alessandro has applied this fabric in the House’s iconic designs such as the men’s Tennis 1997 sneaker and the women’s Gucci 1961 bag range. Take a deep dive into his Instagram to get a closer look.
