Here’s How Taylor Swift Made Friendship Bracelets Cool Again

Like every other Bollywood freak, my introduction to friendship bracelets or bands happened with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The film is responsible for the friendship band craze in the country. Every person in school wanted to get a band wrapped around their wrist by their crushes. While some of the fancy kids used a satin ribbon reel, others invested in beaded ones. Before being placed in storage with other mementos, these bands were on display for around a week.

Years later, they are back in trend thanks to the pop icon Taylor Swift singing these lyrics, ‘So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment, and taste it, that feature in her Midnights hit track You’re On Your Own, Kid.

Who would have thought that these mere lyrics with a metaphor to hold on to your friendships would start a new ritual at her concerts that would go as far as F1 races, the Olympics, and many more monumental places?

If you deep dive, this isn’t the first time Miss Swift has talked or shown affection with friendship bracelets. During her Fearless and 1989 album promotions, she wore such bracelets with fans. And IYKYK, friendship bracelets play an important role in Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s love story.

In his New Heights podcast, Kelce explained that back in last July he had attended a performance of Swift’s Eras Tour at Arrowhead Stadium during the NFL offseason. When he was there, he planned to participate in the friendship bracelet exchange with Swift herself. “I received a bunch of them being there,” Kelce said.

“But I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it.” Ultimately, Kelce’s efforts to do so failed. He explained that left him “a little butthurt,” especially since the singer couldn’t meet him after the show. “I was disappointed because she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” Kelce added. I guess things surely worked out for him.

Today these friendship bracelets have become an identity for her fans; every celebrity who enters the stadium to enjoy her music gets greeted by fans with a bracelet swap. From Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Kidman, Simu Liu, and Blake Lively, to many more. Scroll down to see some of our favorite celebrities and teams sporting these bracelets:
