The Ludhiana-born artist has been on a roll with the release of hit tracks one after the other be it Gul, Alag Aasmaan, Mishri or most recently Husn. He just completed his 10-city India tour, Guldasta and already has more planned out for his listeners. Ahead, Anuv Jain chats with ELLE on his musical journey, how he deals with attention from female fans and more.

ELLE: When you look back from when you started, did you think you would come this far?

AJ: A lot of things have happened in my life that have led to it. Some people might see it and think that it was pretty fast but the people who’ve been a part of my journey know about the tiny achievements and many milestones that have come together to place me where I am now. No, I never thought that it would happen that way. I mean, people do dream about that, so I was just hoping for the best.

ELLE: Who do you dedicate all your songs to? Is there any inspiration from your personal life for your tracks?

AJ: I don’t dedicate my songs to anyone or anything. It’s just written for different people at different stages in my life. It’s from the perspective of some of my friends, my family and me as well. It’s for the people who’ve been around me. That’s my inspiration and that’s who I write for.

ELLE: Out of all the songs you’ve written, which one do you have a special spot for the most and why?

AJ: I have a special spot for all my songs because all of them have these tiny moments, paragraphs and lyrics that have come from my life. Every word is from an experience of my life. But if I were to name one, then it would probably be Maula. It’s one of my lesser-heard songs but the most personal to me.

ELLE: When you’re performing live, how do you prep for and then unwind after your set?

AJ: I prepare by practising the songs, practising singing, just going through the setlist. There’s no major routine honestly. I try to take it easy and drink some water. To unwind, absolutely nothing. Again, I don’t have a proper routine. I just come back to the hotel, have dinner with my team and go to the room, probably watch a movie or if it’s too late, I go to sleep. It’s pretty boring but it works for me. It keeps me in check.

ELLE: How do you handle all the attention from fans, especially females?

AJ: I handle it pretty gracefully I feel. I love meeting people, especially after my show and asking them, taking their opinions as to what they thought about the show. Just listening to their stories and hearing how my songs have impacted their lives. I love it. Talking about female attention, in the beginning, it was pretty crazy. But now I’ve gotten used to it. I’m just really happy that women love my music. They are amazing as an audience and the support that they give is so much, there’s so much love and emotional connection that I can share with them and I absolutely love it. So, it’s nothing too fancy, I’m just used to it now.

ELLE: Will you be exploring any other genres of music?

AJ: Yes, I would be exploring more genres. I’ve promised myself that after every few releases, I’m going to experiment a little bit with my sound. I did that with the song called, Antariksh which was one of my recent songs and it was me singing it fast. It’s basically like rapping. I love that song and I’m happy with the response I’ve gotten, considering it was an experiment. Let’s see what’s in store, but for the time being, I want to give people something familiar.
