The first Monday of May is near and I’m ready to live out my fashion fantasies through our favourite celebrities and icons. Every year, the MET Gala takes over my Instagram feed, and while I sit and decode each iconic look, I’m reminded of the glorious ones that came before. Years and years of luxury fashion and custom looks at the MET Gala have spoiled me, for I can never pick a favourite any more.
Amongst the plethora of designer outfits, the ones donned by our Indian fashion icons will always hold a special place in my heart. As we gear up for this year’s MET Gala and its theme, ‘The Garden of Time,’ let’s take a look back at what six of our favourite Indian stars wore to the MET Gala in previous years.
1. Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra first attended the MET Gala in 2017 in a Ralph Lauren trench dress with a thigh-high slit and upturned collar, spawning many memes. She attended the 2018 MET, looking fabulous in Ralph Lauren once again. In 2019, Priyanka wore an exquisite Dior Haute Couture look.Â
Last year, Chopra wore a black strapless gown with a thigh-high slit, along with a white cape that attached to her white opera gloves. Nick matched her perfectly in a black leather blazer, a black tie, and a crisp white shirt on black trousers.
2. Natasha Poonawalla
Natasha was hands-down one of the best dressed at the 2022 MET. She gave us this stunning Schiaparelli x Sabyasachi look. Not only did she bring Indian representation through her outfit but she took it one step further by blending two designers. She wore a Schiaparelli gold bustier, a Sabyasachi gold six-yard saree, and customised jewels. Last year, she wore a silver custom Schiaparelli gown. She added a personal touch to the metallic look by wearing her late mother-in-law’s brooch.
Back in 2019, she wore an ice blue custom-made dress by designer Peter Dundas.Â
In 2018, she pulled off this bold illustrative gown designed by Prabal Gurung.Â
3. Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone made her MET Gala debut in 2017. She wore a Tommy Hilfiger strappy satin gown. In 2018, she was dressed in Prabal Gurung, who accompanied her as her date for the night. In 2019, Deepika did Barbie-core before it was a thing and showed up in a metallic pink custom Zac Posen gown.
4. Isha Ambani
Isha Ambani chose to wear a black silk saree gown designed by Prabal Gurung, who seems to be the most popular choice for all our Indian icons. Her look comprised black silk fabric draped over one shoulder, crystals, and pearls added to a floor-length silk chiffon train.
5. Alia Bhatt
Alia paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld at the 2023 Met. She wore an Atelier Prabal Gurung ivory silk tulle and satin-face organza exaggerated basque waist ball gown embellished with hand-beaded pearls and scintillating diamond jewellery. Her gown was heavily inspired by Claudia Schiffer’s 1992 Chanel bridal look.
6. Diya Mehta Jatia
Diya, a fashion consultant and influencer, wore this green and black ensemble designed by Prabal Gurung. She posted this stunning look on Instagram with the words, “For me, fashion is all about breaking barriers and blending cultures, and today seemed like the perfect way to do that! I’m honoured to represent my heritage on this global platform.”
