Yeah sure, red carpets are usually the playground where most celebrities get to parade their sartorial genome to the fullest. But then, enter Lady Gaga – pop icon, mother (in our hearts) and our favourite creative disruptor. It’s hard to pick whether her off-duty or red carpet looks take the cake. She’s never not serving. I’m sure she wears a Gaultier bustier with a freshwater pearl choker and 9 inch platforms just to hit the bed.
Her style evolution does not exist as there’s simply no evolution. She’s brought her A-game since the very beginning. Remember the meat dress? That was 14 years ago. She’s set a benchmark only she can come close to. She’s the true definition of camp. Tasteful provocation. Audacious brilliance. Ah, I could simply go on but without further ado, let’s dive into some of her most quirky and outlandish appearances over the years.
In honour of the Camp-themed Met Gala, Lady Gaga served four separate custom Brandon Maxwell ensembles on the carpet, which were peeled off one by one.
Here, she’s lensed wearing a leather dress with black cut-out stars, mesh gloves, fishnet stockings, and platform velvet heels while out in London, England. The cancan underneath is sure working overtime.
While out in New York City back in 2018, Gaga wore a structured leopard print coat, boots, a Mark Cross bag, and slim sunglasses. Bye bye quiet luxury.
Gaga dressed as the VMAs’ Moon Person in a silver jacket by Area, a Muscarella clear helmet, and an Edward Avedis necklace.
History was made. Lady Gaga attended the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards wearing a garment made entirely of raw beef. The outfit, designed by Franc Fernandez and styled by Nicola Formichetti, was attacked by animal rights groups, while also being ranked by Time as one of the greatest fashion statements of 2010. I’d say decade honestly.
At the 2009 VMAs ceremony, the Joane singer donned a sheer, lacy dress that masked her face and featured an uneven hemline. The headgear though! It’s like Groot played Holi.
Lady Gaga made a bold start to her House of Gucci promotional tour by wearing a traffic-stopping costume to the film’s UK premiere. The 35-year-old donned a look from Gucci’s Pre-Fall 2022 collection, which debuted during the brand’s show just a week before this outing.
For one of her nine outfits at the 2020 VMAs (yes, you read that right), Gaga wore a multicoloured Iris van Herpen suit and her go-to black Pleasers boots. No one does avant garde better than her.
Alexa, play The Man by Taylor Swift por favor. Back in 2011, Lady Gaga made her debut as Jo Calderone, the chain smoking greaser, during the MTV Video Music Awards. Oh to be in the audience, dazed and confused.
Lady Gaga’s third album Artpop sure received mixed reviews, but the costumes during her promotional stints were off the charts. Only she can pull off sartorial wizardry of this kind.
