Imagine wearing a dress you purchased at the mall, just to take it out for spin at the prestigious Grammys. Stylist-loving, acutely media-trained celebrities could never except for Lana Del Rey, of course. Been there, done that. Truth be told, (and this is coming from someone who’s had her as the top artist on Spotify for the past three years), Lana really doesn’t care, about fashion, or dressing a certain way. Lana Del Rey self-negates any weightage which is otherwise given to one’s highly manicured persona for PR’s sake and yet manages to stay relevant.
At the Leeds Festival, Lana Del Rey showed off her not-so-newfound love for small brands by dressing in a $68 white flowery slip dress from a local store. She added white cowboy boots to give the ensemble a country touch, maybe alluding to her upcoming Western-inspired album Lasso.
But then suddenly, the goddess of sad pop was also spotted wearing a black minidress from Chanel’s spring/summer ’23 collection, which are also posted as a series of black and white photos on the ‘gram. Not her usual self, truth be told. Regardless, a welcome diversion. Her ribbon-adorned hair too, was reminiscent of a style icon Karl Lagerfeld established in the 1980s and 1990s, fully paying homage to the hallmark fashions of the Maison.
Loved fashion account, @databutmakeitfashion reported a 24% spike in searches for Chanel, as soon as Lana went live with the look, thereby establishing her dominance as a style icon, maybe on accident but nevertheless, an iconic moment in time.
She’s known for frequenting casual fits that somewhat fit the sporty vibe and boasts of an armoire replete with white t-shirts and blue jeans (walk into the room and you make my eyes hurt, it was like James Dean for sure). Her affinity for sentiment-heavy, Americana-laced elements is no news to her fans, with her discography, especially Born To Die evoking like-minded emotions that seamlessly reflect in her choice of colours, prints and silhouettes.
While many credit her lack of ‘serving’ to her set-in-stone ways of doing things (which is not true, if you ask me), her media outings have had significant wins, that to be honest, warranted more attention and appreciation given the heart put into the same. Take Lana Del Rey’s Gucci moment at the MET for example.
Lana Del Rey made quite an impression at the 2018 Met Gala alongside Jared Leto and Alessandro Michele donning a long-sleeved, papal-inspired garment with gold accents. Her head was crowned with blue angel wings and a diamond halo, alongside a chest piece in the shape of a heart that bore her stage initials, ‘LDR.’
She’s no Zendaya, mind you. And we know. She’s Lana and she’s a Sad Girl. And she can do as she pleases.
