Step Inside Larrikin, The New Godfather-Inspired Bar In Juhu

From casual bars to fine dining and upscale restaurants, you’ll find it all in the stretch of Juhu. If it’s the latter that appeals to you a tad bit more, then there’s a new space in the locale that you’d want to bookmark as it brings a premium selection of single malts and cigars under one roof. Say hello to Larrikin–a Godfather-inspired upscale neighbourhood English bar by Ankit Tamang, the second-generation owner of the China Gate Group.

With a strong foundation in multi-cuisine restaurants like China Gate, Caravan Serai, Global Fusion, and entertainment hubs like Tap, Bora Bora, and Walkman Bar, Larrikin is the latest addition, filling the missing piece under their roof as a sophisticated lounge. Speaking about what made him venture into a completely different space, Ankit shares, “With China Gate, we’ve explored a spectrum of various cuisines. Larrikin is born from an understanding of contemporary preferences, placing a spotlight on the prevailing trend of exceptional cocktails. Our curated menu merges innovation with classics, reflecting the evolving palate of our patrons. Recognising a shift in dynamics, we observe a growing preference for relaxed yet comfortable settings, accompanied by exquisite cocktails and a premium dining experience. Larrikin is our response to create an environment where patrons can unwind in style, savouring both the artistry of mixology and the pleasures of refined dining.”

As someone who has grown up dining at China Gate and Caravan Serai, it was hard for me to open up to this completely new concept. But my curiosity overpowered this mental block, which made me visit Larrikin for an experience. Little did I know I was in for a pleasant surprise.

The Vibe

An elegant yet relaxed space, Larrikin is a place to unwind after a long day. Dim lighting coupled with low seating exudes an intimate yet inviting setting. You can spend time indulging in a conversation with your partner or enjoy a cigar and single malt over a business deal in a dedicated spacious area. Fit to its theme, you’ll find paintings of characters from The Godfather and animal art installations. For me though, it’s the swanky bar that grabs all the attention.

Mixed Right

Renowned mixologist Chetan Gangan seeks inspiration from the surrounding Juhu Beach to craft the cocktail menu. Take your pick from a wide selection of premium single malts, among others. I liked the signatures B-tel Negroni (a harmonious blend of betel leaf-infused gin, Campari, and gulkand), Oi!… Larri (tequila, homemade tamarind mix, and the perfect rim of homemade salt), and Antidote (an exquisite combination of whiskey, pomegranate juice, ginger syrup, and a smoky whiskey float). The winner for me was the nostalgic, Kaala Khatta Sour, a whisky cocktail) which took me back to the days when I relished golas at Juhu Beach as a kid.

Culinary Affair

Chef Dil Gurung has curated a tantalising menu with dishes that draw inspiration from European cuisine, featuring imported, delectable prime-cut meats. I enjoyed biting into the well-cooked, succulent Pork Ribs and Chicken Wings, and digging into other appetising dishes like Avocado and Feta Salad, Avocado Bacon-Wrapped Prawns, Fish and Chips (a classic) and Jalapeno Jack Cheese Poppers.

Frutti de Mare pizza, Artichoke Tortellini, Roast Chicken Dinner, Seafood Cannelloni and Grilled Salmon Lemon Caper are comforting picks for the mains. However, my preference leaned towards the Chef Specials like New Zealand Lamb Chops (fire-smoked lamb chop with grilled baby carrot, asparagus, french beans served with butter herbs black rice and red wine jus), Rib Eye Steak (Tende cut boneless fire grilled steak served with grilled baby carrot and sweet potato in cherry-Béarnaise Sauce) and Lamb Shepherd Pie (slow-cooked herb cheese-flavoured minced lamb meat topped with creamy mashed potato and served with sliced sourdough bread).

Got a sweet tooth to satisfy? The menu features three classic desserts to satiate your cravings. Take your pick from the Home Made Tiramisu, New York Cheese Cake or Belgian Hot Chocolate to end your meal on a sweet note.
