Tell Me Mauve

Let’s take a look at this gorgeous colour that’s making us go gaga. A pale, bluish-purple hue named after the mallow flower (which is known as mauve in French.. Si Jolie!), it sits between violet and pink on the colour wheel. It is a neutral purple that has a slight grey tint.
We spoke to Bianca Louzado, celebrity makeup & hair designer and founder, CODE Beauty, about her thoughts on the mauve beauty trend and she says, “This bold yet subdued colour is the perfect shade for the season. Not only are people using mauve on their nails, but also as hair colour and definitely in makeup.” She’s also recently created some stunning mauve makeup looks for Manasa Varanasi, Miss India World 2020, and even some of her brides.
And if you’re wondering whether mauve is going to suit your skin tone, fret not. “This is one colour that is in perfect sync with all skin tones in its varying gradations of intensity,” says Bianca. If you’re still not convinced, we urge you to check out Rihanna’s feed for her mauve makeup looks and a pretty Fenty beauty face palette she recently launched.

Mauve is, in fact, making a comeback from the 90s, just like brown lips did. The difference now is that this flattering hue isn’t being limited only to lips or eyes, but is being boldly swept across cheekbones as well.
And while it’s common for one to reach for nude, pink or coral blushes, isn’t it time to push the boundaries? Sure, purple-toned blushes can be intimidating for many because, let’s be honest, the colour appears too intense in the compact. But with the right application technique, mauve as a blush can add depth to the look especially when paired well with a contour.
Bianca adds, “If you want to achieve ‘dolphin skin’ which is another huge trend this season then mauve blush is the one you must try.” She reveals that mauve blushes have also become a favourite after the series Bridgerton popularised that ethereal vibe.
Go Monochromatic With Mauve
Considering how flattering it is on a variety of skin tones, mauve can be worn as a monochromatic look on your lips, cheeks, and eyes all at once without looking OTT. “It is an elegant monochromatic look that gives off an edgy yet romantic vibe,” says Bianca.
Do’s & Don’ts with Mauve Makeup
1. Bianca cautions against using peach-toned lipsticks with this palette of colour. “When trying a monotone effect, use a pinkish nude or pink lip to offset the eyes and cheeks,” she says.
2. Mauve eyeshadows lend themselves perfectly as a base for shimmery eyelids, which is great for an evening look.
3. Wear mauve or purple-toned blush higher up on the cheek for a snatched look that’ll make your cheekbones pop.
Interestingly, since pale purples are often used as colour correctors to cancel dullness and sallowness, mauve makeup can actually help brighten the complexion.
Well, we’re sold! And in the words of Miss Daphne Bridgerton, we burn for you, mauve!
