Meghan Markle’s Outfits In Nigeria Pay Homage To Their Culture And Princess Diana Both

Meghan Markle

Marred by odious tabloid culture and a general dislike for being herself (welcome to being a woman in the spotlight), Meghan Markle’s life in the public eye has been scrutinised to the nines. Being married to a royal is just the seasoning on the side. Yet, she emerges triumphant, because of her congenial ability of connecting with the masses and relying on relatability as a bonding medium. No ‘do you know who I am’ business with her, so clearly, we love her here.

Apart from being a hit with the masses, Meghan Markle’s recent three-day trip to Nigeria was a sartorial masterstroke, with three strong pillars. One, respect for the Nigerian culture (she’s also part Nigerian). Two, subtle nods to Princess Diana by wearing her jewellery. Three, re-wearing a dress she’s worn a few times in the past (not groundbreaking, we’re aware but genuinely refreshing).

Merging Sensibilities

Meghan Markle wore a Fal Wrap Skirt with the traditional Aso-Oke Fabric, for an occasion at Ilupeju Senior Grammar School with the group Giants of Africa. The previous day, the Nigerian Diaspora Commission had given her the item as a present. She paired her new skirt with a white Carolina Herrera shirt and we’re loving the soft styling.

Soft Tones

On May 10, Meghan Markle aka the Duchess of Sussex wore a muted ensemble by Heidi Merrick and her jewellery was particularly significant; she donned a gold collar necklace that was identical to the one that the late Princess Diana wore when she visited Nigeria in 1999.

Rewearing Resurgence

At the State Governor House in Lagos, the Duchess of Sussex looked stunning in a canary floor-length Carolina Herrera dress designed for her while she was expecting Prince Archie. She also wore it for the first time on his birthday in 2020. Loving the traditional shawl on her left shoulder as well.

Business Casual

During their official welcome to Nigeria at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s look was a subtle nod towards the green and white Nigerian flag. Meghan donned a white pantsuit by Altazurra, along with suede shoes by Manolo Blahnik and earrings by Ariel Gordon. Crisp to the T.

Heartfelt Homage

Meghan wore vintage Dior clip-on earrings and a modest St. Agni column gown to a reception at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters where she was also wearing Princess Diana’s minimal diamond cross necklace.

Thee Icon

The Nigeria Unconquered game at the Lagos Polo Club was the last leg of the Nigerian tour for Meghan Markle where she wore a printed Johanna Ortiz halter-neck dress, red beaded earrings, and sunglasses by Heidi Merrick. So understated yet stunning.
