‘AM’azing Sex: Experts Extol The Virtues Of A Morning Romp In The Sheets And Its Health Benefits

Morning sex

I’m not a morning person, I’m barely a person on most days. I cannot physically function in the AM without a steaming cup (or cups) of black coffee. But there are some moments when being a morning person isn’t that bad. Waking up to texts that say ‘Your order has been shipped’, or to your manager telling you that it’s a work-from-home day always makes my morning brighter than usual. Another addition to that list is morning sex. Beginning your day with an orgasm? Sign us up!

In her book, ‘Because It Feels Good’, Dr Debbie Herbenick, a sexual health scientist and researcher emphasises how partners who engage in morning sex are happier and have an optimistic outlook on life. Apart from allowing you to have a great time, morning sex has a variety of other benefits which beckon you to consider it. After all, Kourtney Kardashian-Barker and Travis Barker are ardent fans of it. She revealed in the season 3 premiere of The Kardashians that she and Travis enjoy their morning sex sessions.

Dr Aruna Kalra, senior gynaecologist and obstetrician at CK Birla Hospital says, “Sex generally has a variety of health benefits ranging from positive impacts on your immune system to improved heart health too. However, morning sex eases you into the day and increases your energy by copious amounts.” She elaborates on how testosterone levels are at an all-time high early in the morning for everyone, fuelling your sex drive and making the experience all the more enjoyable.

Off To A Good Start With Morning Sex

Your body is well-rested

A good night’s sleep ensures that our bodies are physically and mentally well-rested. As adults, we’re used to hectic routines that often involve tiring work days, leaving us with little to no time for having some fun. On the contrary, when we’re up in the morning we’re often at our freshest, with our bodies ready (hint: morning wood!).

Boosted levels of oxytocin and serotonin

That instant feeling of euphoria you feel right after sex? That’s oxytocin, the ‘love’ hormone and serotonin, the ‘feel good’ hormone are hard at work! Studies have proven that a combination of these hormones is related to lower anxiety and a happier outlook on life. And if that wasn’t enough, it also results in a spike of endorphins, hormones that help relieve pain and stress. Research proves that morning sex is a natural stress reliever.

An assured productive day ahead

A 2017 study by the Journal of Management revealed that the ‘post-sex’ afterglow lasts for a whole 24 hours and also contributes to increased productivity in the workplace. Employees showed an increase in job satisfaction and a better mood at the workplace. If you’re struggling to be productive at work, this may be a tangible solution for you!

Increased intimacy

You’re at your most vulnerable when you wake up in the morning. Morning sex is a great way to take intimacy up a notch and help you bond with your partner. Think about the post-sex aftercare with your partner right before you start the day. Nothing like morning snuggles with morning coffee, right?

Stronger immune system

A rarely-known benefit of sex, especially morning sex is that it results in the enhancement of IgA, an antibody that wards away commonly caught infections, building up your immunity in the process.

Hello, morning workout!

Let’s face it, morning workout sessions at the gym are hard to crack. It’s no secret that morning sex can prove to be a great workout which gives your morning an exciting jumpstart. Harvard Health tells us that sex helps us burn five calories a minute, so you don’t have to worry about hitting the gym in the morning. As we all know, a great workout always results in a better mood and a calmer mind.
