The first Monday of May is almost here and I’m impatiently anticipating some monumental designer and celebrity collaboration, at the upcoming MET Gala. One of the stars that has always stood out for me is Natasha Poonawalla. After giving us the iconic Sabyasachi X Schiaparelli moment in 2022, I look forward to her probable presence this year as well, hopefully in a garden-y couture piece, paired with an exaggerated headpiece.
Ever since my fashion awakening, I’ve been a keen devotee of Mrs Poonawalla and her ‘fashion over functionality’ sartorial choices. She’s bold, experimental, and groundbreaking, propelling her as some sort of an epitome of maximalist fashion.
“You do a little too much everytime.” “Wear something simpler next.” “You’ve got too much time in your hands to do all this!” The entrepreneur and socialite’s comment section is replete with absurd reactions to her extravagant pizzazz.
Yes, her fashion choices might be a little too much for the masses and she’s got plenty of time to execute these whimsical ensembles, but do you know what else has she got? The tenacity to live in the moment and be the moment! In the age of social media, where everyone looks like everyone, Natasha Poonawalla takes centre stage in redefining the norms of high fashion by channelling the risqué baddie in her.
Natasha is the certified darling of high-fashion girlies, with “more is more” written all over her memo. Keep reading to have a look at her outfits that make a solid case for her idiosyncratic style, giving a peek at her bespoke couture collection.
Dripped in Chanel
This 2023 MET Gala after-party look had Poonawalla recreate the iconic Chanel look from the runway, that was seen on Linda Evangelista in the ’90s. I bet no one advocated for stacking jewellery as good as her!
The Chanel gloves seem to be a conscious choice by the socialite, in order to pay tribute to Karl Lagerfeld. The three waist chains and the black leather beret added some oomph to the fit (she ain’t mob wife, she is the mob).
Windmill-Waltz
This is your sign to go wear that hat! Trust Mrs. Poonawalla to serve couture and this look is the prime example of it. The entrepreneur donned this flowy white skirt with a black sheer top by Harris Reed (CD of Nina Ricci) and added a hint of couture by pairing it with a windmill ‘esque headpiece. The socialite was lensed wearing it for Paris Fashion Week.
Gilded Glamour
This 2022 MET Gala look held the fashion fraternity in a chokehold. With the intent to serve the look of a lifetime, Natasha Poonawalla draped herself in a golden Sabyasachi saree along with a fitted golden Schiaparelli breastplate, styled by Anaita Shroff Adjania.
The ensemble succeeded in marrying both the designers’ sensibilities and brought out their strengths to blend happily. Gilded glamour was done right with the meticulous nail embellishments and stacks of complementing jewellery.
Tick-Tock
High fashion enthusiasts take notes! Natasha Poonawalla made a statement by layering these Thom Browne pieces at the American Museum of Natural History. The businesswoman manifested art into fashion by accessorising her ensemble with Thom Browne’s clock bag and white high-platform heels.
This look, though seems unwelcoming to the untrained eye due to several patterns and plaids but for the trained eye, it’s impactful and moving.
Cocoon Couture
Unthinkable and ostentatious to the masses, audacious and artsy to me. Natasha Poonawalla wore this Moncler X Pierpaolo Piccioli outfit that had its inspiration taken from African fabrics in the hood.
The socialite wore a white floor-length padded skirt and a cocoon-like hood with striped patterns. The mingling of both the designers integrated the blend of ethereal elegance and couture seamlessly.
