Need Help Dealing With Your Makeup Addiction? A Capsule Makeup Collection Might Be Just What You Need!

If you thought the concept of a capsule wardrobe was cool, you’re going to love what we’ve got for you. When we think of a capsule wardrobe, we think of a few classic pieces of clothing that go well with each other, no matter how we pair them. The result is a coherent, put-together look that did not take you hours to decide on because of the way you chose to manage your wardrobe.

What if I told you I could help you apply the same principle to your makeup kit too? Anyone who uses makeup KNOWS that a makeup bag is probably the messiest part of their routine. One reason that your makeup storage tends to get easily disturbed is that makeup can be so tempting to buy- even more so than clothes. The fun packaging, gorgeous colours, luxurious feel of the product and moreover, how it makes you feel so good about yourself make it a hard-to-resist, dopamine-boosting purchase every single time. And suddenly one day, your makeup kit is all over the place and you realise all those purchases have added up.

Enter a capsule makeup collection. A perfectly neat and tidy makeup bag, without having to dig and dive into looking for what you want. As therapeutic as playing with makeup is for most of us, when we’re trying to get ready for that last-minute date, or are running late for brunch with the girls, not being able to find your favourite products is the last thing you need.

We asked makeup artist Jemima Khan to give us the complete guide to creating a capsule collection for your favourite makeup looks. “My idea of a makeup capsule collection is to have all the essentials that will help me create a quick signature look. One should absolutely have a capsule makeup collection in this day and age, where we’re all living at a break-neck pace. Multipurpose products can really help you up your game. Working professionals, students, and mums on the go must have a capsule makeup collection to enhance their everyday looks.”

“A capsule makeup collection should consist of a moisturiser, SPF, concealer, translucent powder, neutral eye shadow palette, mascara, multipurpose blush for your cheeks and lips (even your eyelids for a monotone look), a lipgloss, an eye pencil and setting spray.” Some of Jemima’s favourite beginner-friendly looks to include in your capsule collection are Tint Cosmetics Lip Gloss, Benetint by Benefit, M.A.C Macstack Mascara, L’Oréal Infallible Concealer and M.A.C Prep + Prime Fix+ Spray. She ends her conversation with us by sharing her hopes for the concept of owning a capsule makeup collection to pick up among people so that we can be mindful consumers of makeup and put an end to overconsumption.

Make The Most Of Your Capsule Collection

To create a wider range of looks, every makeup kit should have one skin tint/natural finish foundation with low coverage for everyday looks and one foundation with higher coverage for events and parties. Consider a cream face palette, which comes with highlighter, blush, bronzer and concealer, all of which can be used to create multiple natural or glam looks. Add three to four everyday nude lipstick shades to the mix- possibly with different finishes, a tinted lip balm and a couple of berry-toned or your favourite evening lipstick shades. Did you know the French love using their lipstick as blush too? Perhaps we should take this as our cue. A clear mascara can help lift and separate lashes for an au naturel look, while also setting your brows in place for the day (bonus: you can use it to tame your baby hair flyaways, too!)

Capsule Collections And The Environment

A capsule collection is not just for someone looking to organise their lives, but it’s also for you if you’re consciously trying to reduce your consumption and get a hold of those online orders you seem to be putting in day after day. I promise you, when you get down to doing this, it will feel like shopping for your own makeup kit because you’ll find so many gems in there you’ve probably forgotten about. It’s a more sustainable approach to glam, without compromising on creating as extra a look as you like. Oh, and let’s not forget, your pocket will thank you for months to come.
