A Netflix TV adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is believed to be in the works at the streaming service, with Dolly Alderton understood to have signed on to adapt Jane Austen’s novel for the small screen.
Published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice is arguably Austen’s most famous novel. The story — which follows heroine Elizabeth Bennett and her suitor, Mr. Darcy — has previously been adapted into multiple formats, notably with the BBC’s 1995 miniseries that starred Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth and Joe Wright’s 2005 film that starred Keira Knightley and Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen and ultimately received four Oscar nominations.
While far from the first platform to adapt the novel, Netflix’s certainly looks set to be the most modern and forward-thinking. Here’s everything we know so far.
What will the plot of Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice be?
While the exact adaptation of Austen’s classic novel is as yet unknown it’s understood that Netflix commissioned the production of a Pride and Prejudice TV series on the back of its adaptation of Austen’s novel Persuasion in 2022. The news comes amid Netflix’s recent success with another Regency-era romance series: Bridgerton. Adapted from Julia Quinn’s romance novel series, the show follows the courtships and eventual marriages of siblings from the noble Bridgerton family and is currently filming its hotly-anticipated fourth season. Per Deadline, Dolly Alderton, the author of Everything I Know About Love who also adapted her book for the small screen, is understood to have been tasked with writing the latest script from Jane Austen’s 1813 novel, which no doubt means that the story will have a thoroughly modern makeover before hitting the small screen.
Who will star in Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice?
While no plans or confirmations have been unveiled by the streaming service, rumours began circulating on November 4 that The Crown’s Emma Corrin was set to portray Elizabeth in the series. A source told a publication: ‘Dolly is working on a Pride And Prejudice script for Netflix and thinks Emma would be perfect to play Elizabeth. She is a big fan of Emma’s work, most notably in The Crown where Emma played Princess Diana.’ Daisy Edgar-Jones has also been touted as a name that producers are also eyeing up for the series.
When Will Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice Air?
While Netflix has yet to officially confirm the series, it is understood, per Deadline, to be in the works, but that means guesstimating a release date hard. What might hurry things along, however, is the fact that the BBC has also confirmed that it’s working on its own Pride and Prejudice spin-off. Titled The Other Bennet Sister, the 10-part drama will focus on Mary Bennet – Elizabeth’s supposedly unremarkable sister and the middle Bennet daughter who is typically overlooked.
