No Plans For New Year’s Eve? Worry Not! Here’s What You Can Do Instead

New Year

If I had a rupee for every time someone asked me what my plans for New Year are, I’d be able to afford that overpriced flight ticket out of the city and actually have a plan for New Year. Usually, not having anything to do on NYE probably means that I’d spend the evening scrolling through social media, looking at other people having the time of their lives and end up feeling bad about myself (eventually leading to feeling bad about feeling bad). But if there’s one thing that 2021 has taught me it is that the grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s greener where you water it. So, why not make the most of what we have? If you too have no plans for New Year’s Eve, here are some fun things you could do at home:

Have A Movie Marathon

Order your favourite food, uncork the bottle of wine or make yourself a cocktail, cuddle up and start your movie marathon. If you’re looking for the classic NYE movies, we recommend When Harry Met Sally, Carol, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Sleepless In Seattle, About Time, While You Were Sleeping and New Year‘s Eve (duh). You could also download Teleparty, the browser extension to watch movies with your friends and family online.

Read A Book

There’s nothing quite like a good book (with some hot chocolate) to transport you to another world. Re-read your favourites to embrace that warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia or pick up a new book to dive into. Here are our top 10 picks of must-reads this season.

Have A Solo Dance Party

Trust us with this one— blast some feel-good music and dance like no one’s watching. It’s not about getting the steps right, it’s about reaching that flow state— let your body be your guide. Get groovin’ to release those endorphins, shake up the stagnant energy in your system and don’t hesitate to sing your heart out while you’re at it (sorry neighbours).

Find Out What The Future Holds

A personal favourite activity— reading my horoscope for the upcoming year always gets me excited. Click here to find out what the stars have in store for you in 2022. If tarot is something that interests you, go ahead and watch some ‘pick a card’ readings on YouTube to get a deeper insight into the various aspects of your life in 2022— from love and relationships to career, education and more. Own a tarot deck? give yourself a 2022 reading.

Write Letters

Take the old school route and write some handwritten letters to your friends and family. You could also write a letter to your future self or your younger self as a self-reflection activity. Journaling about the past year is also a great way to realise how far you’ve come. Light a candle, find a cosy spot and pen down your thoughts. Reflect on the past year and set your goals for 2022.

Dress Up

Not going out doesn’t have to translate to not dressing up! Put on that sparkly outfit, doll-up and click some fabulous pictures of yourself. Feeling a little extra? Take this opportunity to make some trending reels for your Instagram. End the night by indulging in some relaxing self-care— a long bath, your skincare routine, soothing jazz in the background— the whole schbang.

Sleep Early (Or Don’t)

Sleeping early on New Year’s Eve may seem a little weird but it might help you beat the 12 am celebration FOMO. Hit the sack early and wake up early— there’s nothing better than starting your New Year on a fresh, non-hungover note. On the contrary, if you’re having fun, stay up for as long as you want and take your movie marathon way into the early hours of Jan 1.
