As production on the third season of the Sex and the City sequel, And Just Like That.., ramps up, rumours have started to swirl about the role that Kim Cattrall might play in the upcoming series.
It is widely believed, following the success of her cameo in the second season, that Cattrall has signed on to reprise her role of Samantha Jones for the prequel’s third outing, which is currently filming in and around New York City.
“Since they’ve paved the way for Samantha to come back, it’s assumed that they’ve done a deal with Kim and they’re just waiting for the right time to announce it,” an insider said.
“The word is that she’ll get to do all her scenes in London. They’ll be bending over backwards to pay her an absolute fortune, and it’s all on her terms because she’s so central to the franchise.”
While relations between Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays AJLT’s protagonist, Carrie Bradshaw, are understood to be strained it is understood that the pair are willing to make it work for the sake of the show.
“It’s still open as to whether she’ll even film any scenes with the other women, but certainly she doesn’t want to break bread with them off camera and pretend like nothing ever happened,” the insider explained. “For Sarah, her attitude stinks, and she really thinks Kim needs to get a grip and let it go. If she’s making this much money, why is she still holding grudges? She doesn’t get it and doesn’t like it and it’s just going to lead to more tension.”
Cattrall, who reportedly earned a cool £1 million for her two-minute appearance, was rumoured to have agreed to star in the second season of AJLT to mark the 25th anniversary of SATC as a gift to fans, and for that reason only.
In an interview in 2023, she shared some of her conditions for her return.
“It’s very interesting to get a call from the head of HBO saying, ‘What can we do?’ and I went, ‘Hmm. Let me get creative,'” Cattrall said. “And one of those things was to get [costume designer] Pat Field back, because I just thought that if I’m going to come back I gotta come back with that Samantha style, I gotta push it.”
“And we did,” she added.
