Despite coming from a lineage of stars, Sara Ali Khan doesn’t strut in the shadow of anyone. Since her debut in Kedarnath, she has continued to prove her mettle as a star with a profound love for the craft. Fresh off the heels of her success in Netflix’s latest Murder Mubarak, Sara is making it known that she’s an unstoppable force. She graced our digital cover, where she spoke to ELLE India about her quest to retain authenticity and soar to new heights.
One scroll on her Instagram account will reveal that Khan loves her barely-there makeup and statement eyes. On our digital cover, we saw her with an intense brown smokey eye, defined cheeks and a glossy pink lip. Tanvi Chemburkar, her trusted makeup artist spilled the beans on how she recreated this look and the exact products she used.
Here’s how you can recreate Sara Ali Khan’s makeup look that was spotted on our digital cover.
The Skin and Base
Prepping your skin is of utmost importance and often a step everyone misses out on. Use an intensely hydrating moisturiser to prepare your skin for makeup. For a slightly glowy base, choose a multipurpose primer that promises you long-lasting makeup and also gives your skin that added shine. Kiko Milano‘s 3-in-1 Smart Radiance Cream hydrates, primes and illuminates.
Now for the base, instead of choosing a full-coverage matte foundation, opt for a base product with sheer coverage so that your skin can breathe. Smashbox‘s All-In-One Tinted Moisturiser is the perfect choice with its buildable coverage and skin-loving ingredients. Next, conceal your under-eyes and any blemishes with the iconic Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. Set your T-Zone and under eyes with the La Mer Setting Powder to ensure your makeup stays in place.
The Eyes
It’s no secret that Sara’s eyes are the whole star of the makeup look. A classic brown smokey eye isn’t just easy to recreate but it’s also a versatile look that you can wear for any occasion. Using a good quality eyeshadow palette is so much more crucial than we think. For this look, you need an eyeshadow palette with cool browns, some greys and taupe shimmers. Huda Beauty‘s newest eyeshadow palette, the Pretty Grunge Palette fits the bill for this. Use a light cool brown over the sockets of your eyes and then a darker brown to intensify the look.
A smokey eye is nothing without kohl. Use Chanel‘s Stylo Yeux Waterproof Pencil in Espresso to add some drama to your existing eye makeup. Follow that up by smudging your lower lashline with brown eyeshadow so that the edges aren’t sharp. Instead of using falsies for your eyelashes, use a voluminous mascara that also curls your lashes like M.A.C Cosmetics‘ In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash Mascara.
The Cheeks
Everybody is envious of Sara’s sculpted cheekbones, and rightfully so. The secret to mastering this is by going in with a cream contour first since it offers you precision and then setting it with a powder contour to elevate your overall look. Opt for Huda Beauty‘s Cream Contour as the first step and then set it with Charlotte Tilbury‘s Airbrush Bronzer.
Cream blushes add a subdued wash of colour to your makeup look. Use Tarte‘s Breezy Cream Blush and instead of applying it on the apples of your cheeks apply it in an upward direction to sculpt your look further. After this use a soft cream highlighter with a diffused glow like Westman Atelier’s Super Loaded Tinted Highlight on the high points of your face.
The Lips
You can never go wrong with nude, glossy lips! The M.A.C Cosmetics‘ Lip Pencil in Whirl mixed with Pat McGrath‘s Permagel Ultra Lip Pencil in Structure gives your lips a fitting nude hue. Top it off with a gloss to make your lips look juicy and plump. NYX Cosmetics‘ Butter Gloss in Nude adds a shine and some pigment too.
