From the humble town of Partenit in Crimea, SHADU has emerged as a groundbreaking force in the global music scene. Her early immersion in music, starting at the age of six with violin studies, laid the foundation for an extraordinary career. In today’s interconnected world, SHADU exemplifies what it means to craft music that transcends both borders and boundaries, which set the stage for her to reach audiences far beyond her origins.
SHADU’s musical journey began in earnest in 2022 with her debut single, When I, which marked her entry into the Ukrainian music scene. Her approach to music led to her first EP, Gravity, later that year, which charted internationally in the retro wave genre. Following this, she has continued to build her global presence with successful singles and EPs, expanding her influence across various countries. In a conversation with ELLE India, SHADU speaks about her new musical direction, her love for fashion, and more.
ELLE: Tell us about your new EP, SHADU.
(S): Everyone in this world experiences different stages in life, each with its own highs and lows. There are times when life is overflowing with love, happiness, and inspiration, and then there are moments when it feels like everything is collapsing into darkness, with no escape in sight. I’ve been there, and I’ve felt it all deeply. But what I want you to know is that after the darkest night, the brightest day always follows. So, if today feels grey, if it feels like the colour has drained from your life, remember that the most beautiful emotions and unforgettable moments are still waiting for you just around the corner. That’s what my new EP, Need Your Love, is all about.
ELLE: What has been the biggest challenge in transitioning from music to DJing, and how do the two blend together?
(S): Since I was a kid, I’ve always been drawn to learning new instruments. First, it was the violin, then the guitar, and the piano. I think I’ve always had a passion for DJing, so I decided to make it a part of my work. Once I started getting into it, I felt so inspired by this new thing that I can’t even imagine how I lived without DJing before! Now, I realise that mixing DJing with singing is exactly what I’ve been looking for all my life. It just feels right, and doing what I love makes me truly happy.
ELLE: How do you think music and fashion overlap? Are there any new trends or technologies in fashion or music that you’re particularly excited to explore?
(S): Music and fashion go hand in hand. They help express style and personality. Music often sets the mood, and fashion accents that vibe. Together, they create something unique and memorable. My incredible director and producer, Aisha Milevskaya, completely creates all my looks. Her efforts and talent are truly invaluable, helping me express who I am in the most authentic way, and I’m so grateful to her for that. I couldn’t do it without her vision and creativity. Also, a special shoutout to my sound producer, Meyer, whose genius brings the music to life. I’m thrilled to have such a dedicated and talented team, and I genuinely appreciate how my team and I are in perfect sync. Together, we’re crafting this unique blend of trendy Afro-house music and stunning visuals. This is what SHADU is all about—passion, creativity, and teamwork.
ELLE: What impact do you hope your work will have on your audience, especially in light of the current global situation?
(S): The world is a pretty uncertain place right now, and people often don’t feel as comfortable and secure as they once did. I hope that my music will help people take a break from the global issues we’re facing and find joy in the present moment. I want my music to inspire people to find the strength and motivation to believe in a better future for ourselves and our children. I hope that when people listen to my music, they feel the energy, love, and drive that I put into each track.
ELLE: What’s your trick to stay motivated during challenging times?
(S): For me, the most important motivation is my creativity! It’s what gets me up in the morning and keeps me going all day long. After all, it is my life, and I love it. It’s an honour and a genuine joy for me to see a new Shazam, a new playlist, or a new chart. It’s so important to me that my music resonates in people’s hearts – to be listened to! Charts are not just a vanity thing for me. They’re a great indicator that I’m on the right path. My biggest, most amazing dream is to hear people singing my song! Right now, I’m writing tons of music, constantly experimenting with sound, and creating and sharing content on my social networks. I feel like I could do so much more all the time. But when I look back at everything that I’ve achieved in such a short period of time, I realise how happy and proud of myself I am! This is my motivation to wake up every day with an open heart to this world. A world where I can be myself and make my own music.
