As we roll closer to the annual Emmy Awards (2024 will mark its 76th year running) all eyes are currently on the nomination list, and as expected, the snubs, shocks and surprises are all in order. This year, the awards show will take place at the Peacock Theatre and can be streamed from the UK on Hulu or Sky Max or Sky showcase.
The ceremony comes months after the 2023 award show, which was delayed due to the actors’ and writers’ strike. Schitt’s Creek father and son duo Eugene and Dan Levy will be the hosts for this season’s event and will take to the stage on September 15.
Of course, there are some shows that are expected to nab multiple awards over several categories (The Bear and Shōgun) on the night, however not all categories have predicted winners or front-runners.
Between newcomers and the underdogs, to the leading shows and standout actors, we’ve compiled a list of what will be the biggest shocks, surprises and upsets of the night:
The Landslide Wins
This year, Netflix has taken the win as the streaming service/studio with the most nominations, scoring 107 in total. FX is in second place with 93 nods, while HBO/Max has received 91. Despite Netflix’s place on the leaderboard, the real landslide wins will go to both FX for their respective shows, The Bear and Shōgun.
Despite seeing these landslide nominations coming from a mile away, given their cult like fanbases, they will still deserve all the credit if they are to win.
Shōgun narrowly escaped being categorised as a limited series, but thanks to a renewal is it now in the drama category, and will go up against The Crown, Mr. & Mrs Smith, The Morning Show, Fallout, 3 Body Problem and Slow Horses.
The 25-nominated historical drama will see its lead actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai in the race to win Best Actor and Best Actress, as well as nominations for supporting actor categories.
Just behind Shōgun, The Bear has a total of 23 nominations and is expected to clean up in the comedy category. The main cast members Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach have once again been nominated for their roles. The nods also stretch further to supporting stars of the series including Will Poulter, Liza Colón-Zayas and Lionel Byce.
The Newcomers
When Netflix’s Baby Reindeer dropped earlier this year in April, not even the show’s creator, writer and protagonist, Richard Gadd had anticipated the unprecedented reaction to the series. The project amassed 22 million views just under a month of its release, sat on Netflix’s most watched list at the time, and received an impressive 98% score from critics.
The show was the source of much discourse, giving its compelling subject matter that delved into sexual assault and stalking. It also came under fire when viewers began to uncover the true identity of the Martha character, with the show since being viewed as voyeuristic entertainment among some viewers.
The series has earned itself 11 nominations at this season’s Emmys.
The Snubs
Like any award show, the Emmys is not without its snubs. This year, however, the awards show left out quite a number of noteworthy shows which failed to land any nominations. Among them are I’m A Virgo, Expats, A Murder At The End Of The World, The Fall Of The House Of Usher, Girls5Eva and The Gentlemen. Although these series had great names attached to them – Emma Corrin, Boots Riley, Jharrel Jerome, Riley Keough and Mike Flanagan and Theo James (some of whom have previously received nominations and won awards) – they still fell short, despite the fact that some of them have previously been nominated and received awards. That said, several of the aforementioned shows have been nominated for other categories including production, directing and writing.
The HBO adaptation of the book adaptation, Sympathizer only received one nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr). In the same boat, Under The Bridge’s one nomination came from Lily Gladstone in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category.
Actors With Multiple Nominations
As expected, several actors received more than one nomination for the Emmys, with some even bagging two or three. Among them is Donald Glover (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Brie Larson (Lessons in Chemistry), Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer) and Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary).
Other actors include Maya Rudolph (Loot, Saturday Night Live, and Big Mouth), Jonathan Pryce (The Crown and Slow Horses), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building and Secrets of the Octopus), Andrew Scott (Ripley), Jon Hamm (Fargo and The Morning Show), Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country) and Kristen Wiig (Palm Royale and Saturday Night Live).
