The DNA Of Indian Fashion: Nandita Thirani

BANNER IMG (42)

House of Nandita Thirani is distinguished by a modern interpretation of traditional workmanship and a bohemian sensibility. Nandita Thirani is one of those designers who can take you from a contemporary, hi-tech atmosphere to a dreamy, romantic realm. Here the designer talks to us about her approach to design, her new collection and everything that’s gone into its making.

ELLE: Where do you find creative inspiration?

Nandita Thirani (NT): I am endlessly inspired by India’s cultural heritage, vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and diverse craftsmanship. Nature also is a constant source of inspiration. My work is also influenced by bohemian spirits that resonate with my brand and personal style.

ELLE: Tell us a bit about your vision behind amalgamating traditional crafts with a modern perspective.

NT: Machine embroidery is now widely used as an economical alternative. But there are still families who depend on hand embroidery work for their livelihood. My hope is to preserve and celebrate Indian craftsmanship by incorporating it into contemporary fashion. I believe that by blending traditional crafts with modern applications, designs can be visually captivating and contribute to sustainability to both international and domestic markets.

ELLE: What makes your brand globally relevant? What can we expect from the label in the coming years?

NT: The brand’s global relevance lies in its ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary twist, appealing to an international audience. It aims to create collections transcending borders, blending diverse cultures and artisanal craftsmanship with modern silhouettes. In the coming years, you can expect to see a continued exploration of innovative techniques. We are also working to launch a new occasion wear-centric pret line catering to the trend-conscious younger generation.

ELLE: Can you tell us more about your new collection, Dreamscape?

NT: Dreamscape features expansive landscapes, soft colours, intricate embroidery, floral detailing, crochet, lace, and sequin embellishment. Made with meticulous attention to detail, it includes lehengas, gowns, dresses, kaftans, and shararas for women of various body types. The collection is crafted from luxurious silks, delicate lace, handmade crochet, and soft chiffon, ensuring a harmonious blend of comfort and beauty.
