IGATPURI

Located in the Western Ghats, Igatpuri is a small hill station nestled in the Nashik district of Maharashtra. Surrounded by the highest peaks in Sahyaadri, there are many forts which were built during the Satavahana dynasty. Quite the pleasurable experience for trekkers and hikers alike, this hill station is also significant in terms of Vipassana meditation. Supposedly the largest Vipassana Center, Dhamma Giri, is located here providing the secluded retreat one might want during a vacay. The town has something for everyone. For the nature lovers, Bhatsa River Valley, Arthur Lake, Kalsubai Peak, Girisagar Waterfall, The Five Waterfalls, Camel Valley hold stunning views and are absolute romantic spots. Forts and temples like Ghatandevi Temple, Amruteshwar Temple, Tringalwadi Fort give this town the much needed texture and depth.

MATHERAN

One of the smallest hill stations in India, it is located on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 metres above sea level. Matheran, which means “forest on the forehead” is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station. An absolute delight for nature lovers, this place get’s its added charm from the Parsi bungalows, beautiful old British-style architecture. Even the roads are built of red laterite. All of this provide for a very rustic and beautiful experience. The city boasts of a total of 38 view points from which one can enjoy the sunrise or sunset – Among these Panorama Point provides the best 360 degree view overlooking the city. Take in the view and bask in the lap of nature.

LONAR LAKE

What better than ticking out of one of the rare phenomenon on earth while enjoying the weekend? Lonar Lake is one of the mesmerizing beauties of nature. The only saltwater lake inside a basaltic rock in the world, Lonar Lake was formed when a meteorite that hit the earth eons ago and formed a 500-foot deep and 6000-foot-wide crater. Over the years, this lake has developed into a calm, emerald green beauty in the lap of nature. The flora and fauna around Lonar only makes it better. An idyllic spot, one can go visit the various temples and sites namely Daitya Sudan temple and the Gomukh Temple which are fine early Hindu architecture. Vishnumandir, Wagh Mahadev, Mora Mahadev, Munglyacha Mandir and Goddess Kamalaja Devia. Or chose to enjoy the scenic panorama. The perfect coalition of nature and man comes to life at this lake.

LAVASA

A slice of Italy tucked away in the western ghats, this town is inspired by the settlement of Portofino and is the newest addition to the hill stations in India. What more could one ask for than a weekend in a town that resonates with the city of romance. Sit in the balcony of a luxury hotel, sip some wine and watch the world go by. From bike trips to long walks, trek to Andharban, experience Segway rides, stroll around lazily and so much more. Lavasa is the perfect town getaway – not too far away, nor very close to the hustle of the city. KHANDALA

It is only unfair to leave out this beauty. What might have started out as a popular movie liner, this place has a lot more to offer. Tucked in the foothills of the Sahyadris, the emerald lush valley and the fleeting clouds make for that perfect backdrop. Cosy in, or just go out hiking or rappelling to the Duke’s Nose. Dotted with forts like Rajmachi, Visapur and Lohagad, there are also caves that one might want to explore, Karla and Bhaja Caves which are historical caves. Karla Caves are the ancient Buddhist caves and are quite the sight. The Bhushi lake is the ideal spot for relaxation after a nice trek or on it’s own. A perfect little slice of heaven close to the city.
