‘Men bashing.’ ‘Victim complex.’ Okay Kabir, calm down darling, those are bold accusations. What’s with the short fuse, is it that time of the month again? Tch tch, poor baby.
Amidst the slew of backhanded comments targeted at women, valiantly comes to our rescue, the flag-bearer of today’s feminist internet trends – ‘women in male fields.’ Having amassed thousands of hashtag mentions and reels, this uno reversal on gendered conditioning is a welcome bout of sarcasm targeted at the now-butthurt, perpetually sexist pricks. And worse, the ones gleefully ignorant of their crudity.
With pertinence to the ‘women in male fields’ trend, women are seen exhibiting the same poisonous traits as some men, on social platforms like X (Twitter) and Instagram in the 10-15 second reel format. It’s largely aimed at males to highlight their mistreatment of women and red flags that often get brushed under the carpet. Or given a pass because of the ‘it is what it is’ manifesto spearheaded by the frat boy adjacents. Bullcr*p. Also known as the Bandra bois community in our context – don’t come at me for this, you know exactly what I’m trying to establish here.
Take the “I don’t know what you want me to say right now” text response when you send a lengthy paragraph expressing every ounce of your argument. Gruelling, I tell you. A reality for a huge chunk of women who’ve poured their hearts out to demand the bare minimum. Only to be faced with that darn ‘wdym?’ text. Thus took root, this tongue-in-cheek trend.
These ‘women in male fields’ reels are usually played over a sped-up rendition of one of Nicki Minaj’s biggest hits Anaconda, which also happens to be a parody of Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-Lot. Minaj has reclaimed and parodied this male gazey original with her own spin, which could be summed up to be a source of empowerment and financial leverage, in contrast to the original song, which actually objectifies women with larger derrières. A hug to whoever picked this song for the first reel ever. Coffee maybe?
It should come as no surprise that there’s a ‘men in female fields’ spin-off too, that has emerged on TikTok, where males reveal their personal interactions with women – some are humorous, I will hand it to them. But this surely has touched a nerve and does make an evident case that men too have suffered some wounds as a result of inappropriate and occasionally toxic feminine behaviour. Narcissism sees no gender.
While some healthy internet banter between the sexes never hurt anyone, some men are taking this opportunity to spread absolute filth in the comment sections and degrade the women making light of the situations they’ve faced via the trend. Thereby, solidifying the very reason for its dawn. And there you have it, the ‘women in male fields’ trend, subtly shaming the breadcrumbers and beige flag enthusiasts in all their glory.
