As an introvert, I know all too well the struggle of making new friends. It’s not that I don’t have any friends; my social circle is just more cosy and intimate. I know plenty of people, but let’s be honest, I wouldn’t plan a grand European adventure with most of them (if you catch my drift).
I often find myself relating to Naina Talwar (Deepika Padukone in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani) when she admits that making friends and fitting in isn’t her forte. Yet, all it took was an ‘Aditi’ (Kalki Koechlin) to pull her out of her shell. Ironically, they couldn’t have been more different.
So, on this Friendship Day, let’s dive back and celebrate some of the iconic friend groups that have won our hearts on the big screen.
1. F.R.I.E.N.D.S
How could we talk about iconic friend groups without mentioning Friends? Even after thirty years, audiences continue to adore the show and quote its memorable lines. Whether it’s Ross’s (David Schwimmer) awkward “Hi,” or Joey’s (Matt LeBlanc) iconic “How you doin’,” this show gifted us with a wonderfully diverse and relatable group of friends both on and off the screen.
Friends brilliantly captured real-life scenarios that happen in any friend group—from hilarious misunderstandings and heartfelt laughter to unwavering support during tough times. This timeless classic continues to remind us of the beauty and complexity of true friendship.
2. Big Bang Theory
While Big Bang Theory was renowned for the camaraderie between Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Howard (Simon Helberg), and Raj (Kunal Nayyar), I found myself particularly drawn to the unique bond between Penny and Sheldon. They couldn’t have been more opposite, yet they supported each other like the best of friends.
One episode that stands out is when Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Sheldon quizzed each other in their respective fields of expertise. Penny tested Sheldon’s pop culture knowledge, while Sheldon challenged Penny’s understanding of physics. This delightful exchange highlighted how beautifully they complemented each other, blending their differences into a remarkable and heartwarming friendship.
3. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
If we’re talking about friendships, let’s give a nod to the cast of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, who showed us that friends aren’t always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, navigating through stormy weather is just as crucial.
The iconic scene? When Imran (Farhan Akhtar) and Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) get into a heated argument and Kabir (Abhay Deol) steps in to mediate. Arjun yells, questioning why Kabir is acting like a judge, to which Kabir hilariously responds, “Who else is here?” It’s a perfect blend of humour and the raw, messy reality of friendship, reminding us that the best of friends aren’t just there for the laughs—they’re there for the messy bits too.
4. Grown Ups
Ever wonder if your school gang would still vibe the same way even after growing up and having kids? It sounds wild, but it’s also incredibly heartwarming. Grown Ups shows us that while distance and time might change a lot of things, true friendships remain unshakable. Five friends reunite after years, only to realise that while much has changed, their bond hasn’t. Funny, emotional, and wholesome, this film beautifully captures the essence of enduring friendship.
5. Harry Potter
What’s cooler: studying magic or battling Death Eaters? The golden trio of Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson), and Ron (Rupert Grint) undoubtedly earn a spot among the most iconic friend groups. Voldemort didn’t stand a chance against this fearless threesome (Am I right or am I right?). No matter how chaotic things got, these three stuck together, facing every challenge as a team. From heartfelt moments to the toughest trials, this trio always had each other’s backs, showcasing the true magic of friendship.
6. Hangover
Imagine planning a bachelor party with your friends that you’ll either remember forever or not at all. That’s exactly what happens to Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Zach Galifianakis), and Stu (Ed Helms) as they wake up to wild and chaotic situations after an epic night out. This hilarious trio navigates a whirlwind of unforgettable (or completely forgotten) escapades, solidifying their status as one of the most iconic groups in comedy.
7. Stranger Things
How far would you go to rescue your friend from another dimension? This daring group from Stranger Things goes to the absolute extremes. From battling terrifying monsters to facing down high school bullies, they stick together like glue, always having each other’s backs. Their unbreakable bond and relentless bravery make them one of the most captivating friend groups on screen.
8. Austin and Ally
This one takes me right back to my childhood Disney days. Whether it was Dez (Calum Worthy) and Trish’s (Raini Rodriguez) hilarious antics or Austin (Ross Lynch) and Ally’s (Laura Marano) sweet, romantic moments, this show was a treasure trove of wholesome friendship memories.
9. Three Idiots
They say the friends you make in college are for life. True or not, the trio from Three Idiots definitely showed us the meaning of true friendship in the most heartwarming way. From shared laughter to tears in tough times, this fictional friend group makes us long for such connections in real life. Pro tip: when reuniting with a long-lost friend, always bring along his ‘potential’ girl!
10. Emily in Paris
Moving to a new country for work can be daunting and anxiety-inducing. But finding a good friend in the city makes everything easier. And what’s better than female friendships? Emily (Lily Collins) and Mindy (Ashley Park) are the perfect match for each other. While Emily tends to make messy decisions, Mindy is always there to support her, no matter what. With a strong character who speaks her mind, Mindy never judges Emily for her choices and always has her back.
11. Deadpool and Wolverine
Though new to the list, can we all agree that this duo has quickly earned its spot among iconic friends? Wolverine might not love the idea, but Deadpool would definitely appreciate being included. Sometimes, all we need is a bit of wit and humour (and some sharp claws) to navigate tough situations. So, here’s to the duo who knows how to kick some serious butt, all while doing it in style.
