This year’s MET Gala was seemingly the MET of the Indians. From Alia Bhatt’s floral green Sabyasachi sari to Mona Patel’s fully functional butterfly gown, we had our moment and how. While everyone’s talking about the iconic looks we saw, I’m fixated on the chokehold saris have on us. It was most definitely not the first one I’ve seen on a global red carpet and I know it wasn’t the last. So, here’s 13 times global red carpets were graced with the iconic sari.Â
1. Naomi Campbell
Naomi wore this pink look at the 2023 MET Gala from Chanel’s 2010 spring/summer collection.
2. Curley Gao
The Chinese singer wore a magnificent Sunderbans-themed sari gown set from Rahul Mishra’s “We, The People” collection at the Weibo Music Awards.Â
3. Natasha Poonawalla
At the 2022 MET Gala, Poonawalla wore this custom, floor-sweeping tulle sari designed by Sabyasachi X Schiaparelli
4. Deepika Padukone
Deepika wore this Sabyasachi sari at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.
5. Sonam Kapoor
Back in 2013, Sonam took the Indian drape to Cannes where she wore a white lace sari with gold embellishments.
6. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
In 2002, Aishwarya took a very traditional rendition of the sari to the Cannes red carpet. She wore this tissue sari with heavy gold jewellery and truly looked like a vision in yellow.
7. Rasika Dugal
Dugal wore this pale blue drape from Raw Mango at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 for her film Manto.
8. Richa Chadha
Chadha’s film Masaan received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival 2015 where she pulled up in a floral green Sabyasachi drape.
9. Alia Bhatt
Bhatt recently stunned us in a floral green Sabyasachi sari at the 2024 MET Gala but she’s no stranger to saris on global red carpets. She wore this black and gold Sabyasachi sari to the premiere of her series Poacher in London.
10. Deepika Padukone
Sabyasachi is a recurring favourite on global red carpets and Deepika chose to wear this look he designed at the BAFTAs 2024.
11. Priyanka Chopra
Chopra graced us with not one but two stunning looks at separate appearances on the red carpet of the Marrakech International Film Festival. One was a black and gold Ritu Kumar sari and the other was a sequinned ivory Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla sari.
12. Vidya Balan
Balan wore a red Sabyasachi chiffon number at the Cannes Film Festival 2013.
