The cobbled streets of New York finally saw some high-heeled action, as in-person fashion week returned to the Big Apple. Fashion connoisseurs and celebrities from across the globe kicked off the extensive month by making front row appearances at NYFW A/W 2022 for names like Michael Kors and Tory Burch.
Besides the regular big-wigs on the calendar like Prabal Gurung, Brandon Maxwell and Proenza Schouler—a fresh batch of new designers made their way to the runway. From Bruceglen’s kaleidoscopic display to July Li’s diaphanous designs—the debutant labels left a sartorial mark.
While there was design uniformity towards the targeted season, each brand presented autumnal silhouettes with a whole new point of view. Pushing the envelope beyond the regular trend coats and puffer jackets—here are some of the noteworthy trends spotted at NYFW A/W 2022.
Hooded Jackets
How to give a regular autumn/winter jacket the Gen-Z treatment? Add a hood and call it a day, just like Michael Kors and Gabriela Hearst did.
Formal Unitards
About time we disassociate unitards from costumes—this season, designers presented multiple versions of this silhouette under both casual and formal wear.
Freerange Skirts
Skirts never left the building, but they did take a backseat when it came to fall dressing. Multiple designers at NYFW experimented with the length and style, giving it a fresh spin. From Peter Do’s pleated skirt with matching blouse and jacket to Tory’s Burch’s wrap shirt and knee-length tan skirt, the options were endless.
Kitschy Knits
Knits are no longer just associated with your grandma’s ugly Christmas sweaters. Designers like Ullah Johnson and Gabriela Hearst have upped the knit game with a boho-chic and old-school nerd vibe.
Bold & Gold
If dainty florals and basic colours don’t cut it for you, bold motifs in gold are here for you to make a statement. Altuzarra’s gradient gold show-stopping dress and Bibhu Mohapatra’s flower power number are not for the faint-hearted.
Dramatic Sleeves
Exaggerated sleeves have been a consistent part of couture, but designers are now playing up with it even when it comes to formal and casual suitings. Serving the big sleeve energy this season was Carolina Hererra and Phillip Lim.
Abstract Dresses
Fashion intersects with art, but quite literally this time. Imagine an abstract painting, but instead of it being on a canvas, picture it on a designer dress. From kaftans to snatched form-fitting dresses—the catwalk had multiple ensembles resembling popular art pieces.
Balaclava
Balaclava is a piece of clothing, which is similar to the hijab and has recently come under the limelight. The popular choice of accessory to beat the cold got a runway stamp of approval this season.
