Since the horrific details of the rape and murder of Asifa Banu in Jammu’s Kathua district first broke, citizens of all religions, ages and ethnicities have banded together to demand #JusticeForAsifa. Peaceful protest marches and candle-light vigils have been held across the country from Goa to Gujarat, urging the government to treat the sexual abuse and violent death of the helpless child — along with the tragic rape cases in Unnao and Surat — as their number one priority. Undoubtedly among the most influential voices in the country, Bollywood’s movie stars took to social media to raise awareness and declare their support to the cause. And yesterday, that surge of solidarity spilt onto the streets, where many stars took time out of their busy schedules to join the protestors at Mumbai’s Bandstand.
Twinkle Khanna, one of the most outspoken voices in the film industry, was spotted in the crowds along with her teenage son Aarav. Aditi Rao Hydari and Kalki brought their own home-made signs, while filmmaker Kiran Rao was seen holding up giant banner that read quite simply, ‘Justice’. Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha were united in their support for the cause.
It was heartening to see that the protest wasn’t limited to just the angry, young names in Bollywood. Salman Khan’s stepmother Helen was also present to register her protest.
