The writer is a bit hesitant here, as calling the sequin sari a ‘lousy last resort’ might just be the equivalent of belittling the famed LBD. Don’t get us wrong, out of all the tried and tested formulae, this blinding six-yard drape stands valiantly atop given its cent per cent delivery rate. But well, whilst being slightly yawn-inducing.
Multiple A-listers are known for frequenting the sequin sari, from award show outings to wedding festivities. Take Kareena Kapoor Khan’s recent Sabyasachi moment for example. Deepika Padukone’s Cannes moment as well. Manish Malhotra too, has many sequin moments to his name, and we’re talking about the most iconic ones here. So what’s with this ceaseless allure?
For starters, it’s easy on the eyes. Silks and brocades sure have established their dominance. Think Raw Mango, Akaaro and Ekaya Banaras. Sequins are more old-school but simultaneously bring in a sense of freshness – two contradictory elements that propel the shimmery drape to the forefront. Here’s Alia Bhatt lensed in a Sawan Gandhi sari, how very demure, how very mindful.
They can also be bold if there’s play on the usage and patterns which is usually a rarity as most designers like sticking to a simple solid palette. This Sabyasachi sequin sari Deepika wore at the Cannes Film Festival while serving as a jury member warrants attention; a departure from his usual more opulent makings but with ample help from his signature hues. Imagine Usha Uthup in her 40s setting the music night at Trincas in the ’80s on fire with this very sari. You see the vision? Very Calcutta coded. Someone hail me a yellow cab now, please.
It’s imperative we talk about Falguni Shane Peacock, as the designer duo is synonymous with similar trims, feathers and of course, sequin overload that prioritises harmony. They’re like the Indian Zuhair Murad and Elie Saab but with a glorious little (not so little) pallu attached to the ensemble. Here’s a throwback to one of their most iconic sequin sari worn by Kriti Sanon. You simply can’t go wrong with this.
While there’s a lot of merit to this iteration of the drape, as someone who observes and writes about fashion trends for a living, it does boil down to a question of effort vastly. Might be slightly critical on my end, but I’m entitled to seeing more, stylists doing more and celebrities daring to drop the sequin sari in exchange for something relatively experimental. I know the Bolly girls are not going to wear a meat dress to an award show but maybe something with more personality. Will do their Instagram feeds more good too, trust me.
