DNA Of Indian Fashion: Varun Bahl

BANNER IMG (72)

Shattering the conventional notion of bridal clothing, Varun Bahl, introduces us to his modern interpretation of Indian couture with a global sensibility . The designer joined us for a conversation on his background, most recent collection, and future plans.

ELLE: What has influenced your creativity over the years?

Varun Bahl (VB): My collections have been a reflection of the inspiration I’ve derived from the people and nature that surrounds me. How giving and grand the nature around us is, the mystical flora and fauna, and the rich culture and heritage of our country have always inspired me.

ELLE: How do you strike a balance between being distinctive and being marketable?

VB: Although tricky, I believe it is extremely important to balance the fine line between finding your own signature voice as a designer, as well as being able to market your pieces to the right audience. With each of my collections, while I create bespoke couture pieces, I also aim to always incorporate more wearable styles to maintain that balance. My signature sustainable patchwork embroideries are one such example, which combines my unique design sensibilities with comfortable silhouettes to form eye-catching and stand-alone pieces that speak to my audience.

ELLE: Can you tell us more about your upcoming collection?

VB: My latest couture collection, Secret Garden showcases a play on different textures and appliques such as 3D embroidered bold floral motifs which are a refreshing reminder of a season where everything flourishes and brings forth nature as my primary inspiration. Secret Garden gives a whole new dimension to my statement embroidery patterns. In this collection, I have converted prints into embroidery using applique work and delicate resham thread work. Each of the pieces is adorned with delightful summer blossom-inspired corsages and elements of nature, such as seashells and feathers.

ELLE: How do you continue developing your skills over the years?

VB: The fashion industry has evolved over the past two decades, and my idea of fashion has always been blending heritage Indian handcrafted embroideries with modern silhouettes and colour sensibilities. For me, it is also about showcasing India’s talented artisans and karigars through the fashion industry’s platform.
