Growing up, Eid shopping was probably the happiest part of Ramadan for me. Every year, the night before Eid, my father would pile us all up on his bike and take us to the most brightly lit-up market, where we’d shop as a family until the wee hours of the night. Jazzy clothes, matching shoes and bangles would be the order of the business. I remember coming back home and still having the energy to parade in those clothes all over again—despite the sugar high from all the sweet treats we’d indulge in during a few short-spanned shopping breaks. Shopping was barely about the clothes back then, it was something about the festive energy that engulfed us all.
Fast forward to today, while the ritual has changed, the joy of putting together an outfit for Eid remains unfazed. Unfortunately, I no longer create a uniform by coordinating my juttis and jewellery with an overtly embroidered attire—but I still enjoy a few outfit changes throughout the day for the multiple luncheons and dinners. Market-hopping today has been swapped with an incessant shopping marathon online, in search of that perfect Eid ensemble.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve built a solid list of homegrown brands to turn to for Eid—the idea is to invest in quantity over quality. I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all moved past the phase where we wore clothes that were heavier-than-our-body-weights for festivals. Today, it’s about quality fabrics, indigenous textiles, delicate handcrafts and garments that look rich, without necessarily burning a hole in your pocket.
