Yves Saint Laurent introduced the hooded gown on the runway in 1969. Later in the ’80s, Azzedine Alaïa popularised the silhouette on celluloid, when he crafted a custom-made wardrobe for Grace Jones in A View To Kill. Henchwoman May Day was unlike any other bond girl in a swimsuit—she was edgy and androgynous, yet feminine and sexy in her own way. The hood-attached attire became her signature in the film and she later walked for the designer’s couture show in the capuche gown. The mermaid bottom and cowl-style hood on top instantly became iconic.

Over the last couple of years, the naked dress and skin-baring silhouettes have become synonymous with sexy on the red carpet. Challenging this trend in 2022, the hooded gown has resurfaced and found its place on every celebrity stylist’s mood boards—resulting in some serious statement-making head covered looks. From Rihanna in a red hooded coat in February to Bella Hadid in a hooded gown by Schiaparelli—the vintage style has had celebrities in a chokehold throughout the year and we’re not complaining.
