Name a 2019 fashion trend and we’ve tried it on for size. Our closet runneth over with dad sneakers, a black bucket hat (favourite bad-hair day accessory), and we even had a brief, failed, relationship with bike shorts. So naturally, when Colour of the Year: Pantone’s Classic Blue (a shade Pantone expects will be the most popular in the year) came into the picture, we were more than eager to style it.
In the interest of styling and shopping smarter in 2020, we decided to go straight to the pros and asked some of India’s top fashion minds. Celebrity stylists Saanchi Gilani and Sanjay Kumar told us what they think about Pantone’s calming choice of colour for 2020
What to pair the hue with:
“The Classic Blue is almost like a canvas. It can be styled with black at night and beige/white during the day. Even a pop of this colour can add a great stand out element,” Saanchi Gilani says.
Tara Sutaria chose to add a pop of colour with the Classic Blue to her white ensemble.
Tricks to sneakily and subtly add the colour to your ensembles:
“The easiest way to incorporate this shade into your outfits is by adding accessories. Don’t be afraid to have fun with scarfs, belts, bags, shoes and headgears But don’t go overboard, make sure the entire ensemble looks cohesive,” says Sanjay Kumar AKA Shnoy.
Gigi Hadid aced day-dressing with this tie-dye linen suit with a Classic Blue micro bag.
Why the shade just works:
Saanchi Gilani: We’ve seen big fashion houses and designers like Balenciaga and Max Mara embody the hue in their recent collections, especially as accessories. Personally, a Classic Blue bag never fails to impress. But then again, that’s the thing about classics. They work with everything!
Kareena Kapoor Khan embraced the Classic Blue with some solid colour blocking.
Sanjay Kumar: The Classic Blue has always been in fashion and is my go-to, but I feel there is always a reason why a particular shade becomes the colour of the year. Pantone’s Classic Blue gives you a sense of calmness and serenity and keeping the present socio-economic matters of the world in mind, I think we could all use a bit of peace (in any form we can get).
The enduring popularity of the shade had been reflected throughout fashion way before 2020. And in case (somehow) you don’t already possess any Classic Blue garments or are looking to freshen up your wardrobe—you now know which shade to keep an eye out for.
